Raúl Asencio Returns to Real Madrid Squad Under Mourinho

Raúl Asencio is back.

After more than a month on the sidelines, the Spanish defender returns to Real Madrid’s matchday list for Saturday’s league clash with Rayo Vallecano, stepping into a dressing room that has moved on without him but now suddenly needs him.

A long way back

Asencio’s layoff stretched to around six weeks, a stop-start spell that began with a muscular problem in the rectus femoris and worsened with a further setback in his shin. For a young defender trying to establish himself under Mourinho, the timing could hardly have been worse.

He has yet to play a single minute for the Portuguese coach. Training sessions, video meetings, tactical talks — all watched from the periphery as others fought for places on the pitch.

That changed this week.

Asencio rejoined full group training in recent days and completed the sessions at normal intensity. The medical staff cleared him, Mourinho approved, and his name reappeared on the squad sheet for the first time this season.

The recall comes at a useful moment. Real Madrid are staring at a congested calendar, with league fixtures spilling into midweek and rotation becoming less a luxury and more a necessity. Mourinho gains another central defensive option just as the schedule begins to bite.

A turbulent summer, on and off the pitch

His return also draws a line under a chaotic summer.

Asencio had been close to leaving the club, his future apparently pointing away from the Bernabéu before injury froze every conversation. Any potential move stalled. He stayed, but not in the way a player wants to stay — stuck in the gym and treatment room, watching others build their case.

Off the field, the noise was even louder.

In recent days, the defender learned of his acquittal in the case linked to a video in which he was involved. At the same time, a court convicted him of driving under the influence of alcohol on the island of Gran Canaria last August.

Mourinho did not hide his frustration.

“A Real Madrid player remains a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do outside the club can harm your reputation and the club's reputation, and I am not happy,” he said, drawing a clear line on standards and behaviour.

Now Asencio walks back into the squad with that message still ringing in his ears. Fit again, he has little room for missteps. The only answer he can give is on the pitch.

A second chance under Mourinho

The defender’s objective is simple: turn a troubled summer into a fresh start. With Mourinho demanding reliability and discipline, Asencio knows this call-up is an opening, not a guarantee.

Real Madrid’s defensive options remain strong, but the absences elsewhere in the squad underline why every fit body counts. Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo all miss out on the list for the Rayo Vallecano match, trimming Mourinho’s choices and making versatility and depth even more valuable.
