Plymouth Secures First Away Win in League One Against Doncaster

Plymouth claimed their first away win of the Sky Bet League One season with a sharp, ruthless 3-2 victory over winless Doncaster – a scoreline that flattered the hosts far more than it did Tom Cleverley’s side.

For long spells this was controlled, composed, and bordering on comfortable for Argyle. The late wobble came too late to matter.

Evans sets the tone

Doncaster began with the urgency of a side desperate to shed an early-season slump, but it was Plymouth who settled quicker and began to dictate the tempo. Once they found their rhythm, the visitors started to pin Rovers back and the opening goal felt inevitable.

It arrived on 28 minutes. Oliver Irow drove in a low strike that forced Tommy Simkin into a parry, but the rebound fell perfectly for Will Evans, who reacted sharply to turn the ball home and give Argyle the lead. It was a simple finish, built on sharper instincts.

Doncaster tried to respond before the break. Alfie May, always their most likely route back into the game, went close with an audacious bicycle kick that took a deflection and looped over. It summed up their half: plenty of effort, very little end product.

May drags Doncaster level – briefly

The pattern shifted just after the restart. Doncaster came out with more bite and were rewarded within six minutes of the second half.

Owen Bailey was bundled over in the box by Matty Sorinola and the referee pointed straight to the spot. May stepped up and this time he did not need anything spectacular, drilling home the penalty in the 51st minute to drag Doncaster level and inject some noise back into the stadium.

For a moment, the momentum seemed to tilt. The home crowd sensed a turnaround. Plymouth simply reset and went back to work.

Pepple and Watts kill it off

The response from Cleverley’s side was cold and clinical. They began to stretch Doncaster again, moving the ball with more purpose, and the pressure finally told with 16 minutes to play.

Bim Pepple was sent into space in the 74th minute, racing clear of a ragged back line. One touch to steady himself, one calm finish, and Plymouth were back in front. It was the kind of composed strike that drains belief from a chasing team.

Doncaster never recovered. Their defending unravelled again nine minutes later.

In the 83rd minute, a defensive mix-up at the back gifted substitute Caleb Watts the simplest of chances. He pounced on the loose ball, strode through and rolled his finish into an empty net. At 3-1, the contest was effectively over. Plymouth had their cushion, and they looked like they knew it.

Late header too little, too late

Only in stoppage time did Doncaster threaten any kind of fightback. By then, the stands had thinned and the urgency felt hollow.

From a Bayley McCann free-kick in the final minute of added time, Sean Grehan rose and thumped a powerful header into the net to make it 3-2. It was a firm finish, but it carried the air of consolation rather than comeback.

The whistle followed soon after. Doncaster’s wait for a first league win goes on; Plymouth climb away from early-season doubts with a first away success and a performance that suggests Cleverley’s side might be starting to find their stride.
