Peter Schmeichel criticizes Manchester United's defensive errors in Hull defeat

Peter Schmeichel did not bother softening the blow.

The Manchester United great singled out three players as the key culprits in the Red Devils’ damaging defeat to Hull City on Saturday, accusing them of basic, costly lapses in concentration.

Michael Carrick’s side, back in Premier League action, were turned over by goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, a result that handed the newly promoted Tigers a statement win and left United facing familiar questions about their defensive resolve.

Dorgu and Heaven in the spotlight

Breaking down Hull’s opener on Premier League Productions, Schmeichel went straight for the set-piece defending and immediately pointed at Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.

The first mistake, in his eyes, came at the near post.

“Observe Dorgu at the front post; he is not even watching the player taking the corner kick,” Schmeichel said. “At that precise moment, he loses focus and lacks the capability to block the first ball.”

That loss of focus opened the door. The corner was allowed to travel, and the danger grew.

Then came the second error at the far post. Heaven, stationed there to mop up, failed to impose himself and allowed Oli McBurnie to outmuscle him before Ajayi struck.

“And naturally, Ayden Heaven at the back post. He allows [Oli] McBurnie to get behind him. That is unacceptable. That is not how one should defend; one must be more assertive,” Schmeichel added, his frustration clear.

Two defenders, two moments of hesitation, one goal that turned the mood inside out.

Shaw’s lapse seals a bruising afternoon

The pressure did not ease with Hull’s second. If anything, Schmeichel’s criticism sharpened.

This time, Luke Shaw was in the firing line for Mendy’s goal. The former United goalkeeper highlighted the left-back’s positioning, accusing him of switching off at the decisive moment and keeping Hull’s attackers onside.

“It is the complete lack of concentration from Manchester United that disappoints me the most. I singled out Luke Shaw. Luke Shaw is two yards behind everyone else, putting everyone else onside. He should not be in that position. He was deceived by the dummy,” Schmeichel said.

From his perspective, it was a veteran making a rookie mistake.

“If he stayed up there, he would be either offside or it would have gone out for a goal kick. That’s a disappointment for me, that an experienced team like that makes mistakes like that.”

For Schmeichel, this was not about tactics or fitness. It was about focus. About a back line that switched off at the worst possible times and paid full price.

Manchester United now turn to another newly promoted opponent, Ipswich Town, at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30. After Hull exposed such soft edges, the question is simple: do they tighten up, or does the anxiety around this United defence deepen?
