Patrick Vieira Appointed Head Coach of Senegal National Team

Patrick Vieira has been named head coach of Senegal, handing one of African football’s blue-chip national teams to a World Cup-winning captain who was born in Dakar but made his name in French colours.

The Senegalese federation confirmed the appointment in a short, pointed statement: “Mr Patrick Vieira is the new coach of the Senegalese national A team. The date of the official presentation and the next steps in its installation will be communicated at a later date. Welcome to Senegal, coach.”

No fanfare. Just a clear handover.

Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, dismissed after Senegal’s exit to Belgium in the last 32 at this summer’s World Cup. That defeat ended Thiaw’s tenure and opened the door for a figure with heavyweight pedigree on both sides of the touchline.

Now 50, Vieira arrives after a spell out of work since leaving Serie A side Genoa last November. His coaching journey has already taken him across three major leagues and two continents: New York City in MLS, Nice in Ligue 1 and a two-year stint in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, where he was sacked in March 2023. He then took over at Strasbourg before embarking on his 12‑month stay in Italy.

His playing résumé barely needs repeating. Three Premier League titles with Arsenal. The heartbeat of Arsène Wenger’s great sides. The World Cup with France in 1998, the European Championship in 2000. A midfielder who defined an era in north London and beyond.

Now comes a different kind of challenge. Not as the midfield enforcer, but as the strategist on the touchline for the country of his birth, trying to turn Senegal’s recent promise into something more permanent.

The official unveiling will wait for another day. The real scrutiny starts when Vieira picks his first squad and draws his first team sheet in green.
