Newcastle United Eye Youssouf Fofana Amid Transfer Window

Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild has taken another twist, with AC Milan’s Youssouf Fofana emerging as the latest name on a growing shortlist.

With just over two weeks left in the transfer window and Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali both gone, Matthias Jaissle is pushing for experience and depth in the centre of the pitch. Newcastle have already sounded out Bayern Munich over Joao Palhinha and kept close tabs on Tottenham youngster Lucas Bergvall. Now, attention has briefly swung to Serie A.

Fofana told he can leave Milan

Italian journalist Matteo Moretto reported on Saturday that Milan have informed Fofana he is no longer part of their plans.

“Fofana is on his way out, and he was informed of this in person,” Moretto said, via MilanNews, underlining the clarity of the club’s stance. At this stage, though, there is no deal close with anyone.

“I can assure you that there aren't any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time.”

That has not stopped clubs from circling. According to Moretto, three sides have already stepped forward to ask about the 27-year-old’s situation: Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Juventus.

“I can tell you that Nottingham have inquired, Newcastle have inquired, and Juventus have inquired,” he added.

Juventus push harder as Newcastle watch on

If Newcastle are in the queue, they are not at the front of it. The early signs point towards Juventus taking a more aggressive stance than the Premier League sides.

“Fofana is certainly an option for Juventus, and the two clubs, Juve and Milan, have spoken and discussed possible situations and market developments,” Moretto reported.

For Newcastle, that leaves Fofana as a live but distant possibility. There has been no mention of a formal bid, no indication of structured negotiations, just an enquiry and an awareness that Milan are ready to sell.

A cheaper solution to a big problem?

Fofana only joined Milan from Monaco in 2024 for around €20 million (£17.3 million) and is under contract until 2028. Even so, Milan are understood to be open to a quick sale.

Reports differ on the exact asking price, but most place it between €15 million and €20 million (roughly £13 million to £17 million). That range could make Fofana significantly cheaper than some of Newcastle’s other midfield targets, especially Palhinha, whose fee and wages would likely sit at the top end of the market.

For a club trying to reshape its midfield without ripping up its financial structure, a 27-year-old France international in that bracket is at least worth a conversation. Newcastle have started that conversation. For now, it has gone no further.

Moretto has repeatedly stressed that the picture remains fluid.

“There aren't any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time,” he reiterated, leaving Milan waiting for someone to make the first real move.

Newcastle have time, but not much of it. With the window ticking down and the spine of their midfield still under construction, the question is simple: do they let Juventus dictate the pace on Fofana, or step in and turn a tentative enquiry into something far more serious?
