Palmeiras Dominates Santos in Copa do Brasil Quarter-Final

Palmeiras didn’t just beat Santos. They brushed them aside and left a three-goal marker on the Copa do Brasil quarter-final.

With Neymar missing from the matchday squad, Abel Ferreira’s side seized the moment in Wednesday’s first leg, cruising to a 3-0 win and leaving Santos with a mountain to climb in the return at Vila Belmiro.

Lopez lights the fuse

From the start, Palmeiras sensed vulnerability.

Flaco Lopez struck first, and he did it in style. Picking up the ball from distance, the forward let fly with a long-range effort that Santos goalkeeper João Paulo could only watch flash past him. It was the kind of early blow that sets the tone in knockout football.

The numbers back that up. He had just come through three full 90-minute outings in a row, against Macara, Vasco da Gama, and Mirassol. The staff chose rotation. The scoreboard made the decision look costly.

Agustin Giay, lively all evening down the flank, whipped in a sharp delivery, and Lopez met it with a precise header that left João Paulo beaten once more. At 3-0, the contest on the night was effectively over. The tie itself tilted heavily in Palmeiras’ favour.

Santos, even with Gabigol introduced from the bench in the second half, could not find a way through. Their play in the final third lacked tempo and conviction. Palmeiras, by contrast, looked like they had another gear.

The margin could have been even more brutal. Twice, Palmeiras broke clear, one-on-one with the Santos goalkeeper. First Giay, then Mauricio, both squandered huge openings that would have turned a commanding lead into outright humiliation.

Santos now head into a fierce away derby against Corinthians in the Campeonato Brasileiro this weekend, needing a reaction just to steady the mood. After that, they must somehow chase down a three-goal deficit when Palmeiras visit Vila Belmiro for the second leg, before travelling to face Internacional.

Neymar’s return to the starting XI now feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity. Without his creativity and edge, Santos looked toothless. With their cup campaign hanging by a thread, can their No. 10 drag them back into a tie that already seems to belong to Palmeiras?
