Neymar's Outburst After Santos' Copa do Brasil Exit

Santos’ Copa do Brasil exit was ugly enough. The mood at Vila Belmiro turned darker still when Neymar limped off – and then went on the attack.

A goalless draw in the second leg against Palmeiras sealed their quarter-final elimination after a 3-0 defeat in the first game. The result, though, quickly slipped into the background. All eyes, and all anger, locked on the pitch and on Neymar’s right hamstring.

The forward pulled up at the end of the first half, clutching the back of his leg. By full-time, he had taken his frustration public.

On Instagram, Neymar unloaded on the Vila Belmiro grounds staff, ripping into the state of the surface.

“I want to congratulate our groundsman at Vila Belmiro. Yesterday, it was the worst pitch the stadium has ever seen, riddled with holes, because they had to uncompact it the day before the match. Unbelievable! On top of playing against the opposition, we were battling the pitch itself. And to top it all off, we had to put in extra effort during acceleration and braking because the surface was so uneven. It's no wonder three players got injured in the first half. Congratulations, then... What a load of crap job.”

It wasn’t just his injury that fuelled the outburst. The first half turned into a catalogue of physical problems that seemed to justify every word.

Lucas Verissimo went off with an ankle injury. Barreal followed as the third player forced out before the break. Each stoppage cranked up the tension in the stands and on the touchline, and each one pointed back to the grass under their boots.

The pressure on Santos is now twofold: a bruising elimination and a fitness crisis around their star. According to ESPN, Neymar is a major doubt for Sunday’s Brasileiro clash with Internacional at Beira-Rio and is not expected to play. Without him, the responsibility to create will shift.

Arthur is set to step into that void, likely making his debut in a more advanced role, operating almost as a classic number 10. It’s a big stage and a brutal moment to be handed the keys.

While Santos counted injuries, Palmeiras chose mockery.

Never shy when it comes to stoking a rivalry, the Alviverde seized on Neymar’s complaints with a pointed, sarcastic post on social media, turning his words back on him and shining a light on their own pitch at Nubank Parque, where the first leg was played.

“We want to congratulate those responsible for the Nubank Parque field... No matter the day, the grass is always perfect and without holes, because it is cared for daily. You can believe it!” the club posted on Thursday.

Then came the real sting, a near copy of Neymar’s own phrasing.

“Besides offering a good playing field for the opponent, our athletes feel safer because, during runs, the surface is always even. It's no coincidence that Palmeiras is the Serie A club with the fewest injuries in the last five years... Congratulations, you know? Great job.”

One night, two very different pitches, and a rivalry that has found fresh ground to fight on. The scoreboard is settled for now, but the debate over the grass – and Neymar’s fitness – will follow Santos into the weekend and beyond.
