Neymar's Phone at Daughter's Birthday Sparks Debate
Neymar’s phone at his daughter’s party turns a family moment into a public debate
Family birthdays are usually the kind of days that live quietly in photo albums and private chats. Cake, balloons, relatives squeezed into frame, a slightly off-key “Happy Birthday” and a few seconds of candlelit chaos that only matter to the people in the room.
This one didn’t stay in the room.
During the celebration for Mel, daughter of Neymar and Bruna Biancardi, everything followed that familiar script. Family gathered, cameras out, the classic chorus of “Happy Birthday” ready to roll. Then came the moment that would end up all over social media.
While everyone leaned in toward the cake, Neymar leaned into his phone.
As relatives sang around his baby daughter, the Brazilian forward was caught on camera with his attention fixed not on the candles, but on a poker game on his screen. A couple of seconds, nothing more. Long enough, though, for the clip to be recorded, shared, replayed and dissected.
It wasn’t simply that he used his phone. It was when he used it. During the central, supposedly unmissable moment of the party.
What might have been just another private family video suddenly became a public referendum on Neymar.
Some laughed. Others saw a problem.
The reaction online split quickly.
On one side, users brushed it off. To them, it was Neymar being Neymar: a superstar living life with a phone in hand, able to juggle a family event and a quick game on an app. No drama, just a modern snapshot of a man used to constant stimulation and cameras always nearby.
On the other side, the tone hardened. Critics zoomed in on the timing. Poker on his phone while his daughter’s “Happy Birthday” rang out around him? For that group, the image screamed misaligned priorities. The word “red flag” surfaced more than once as people questioned how present he really was in that moment.
Some went further, tying the scene to what they suggested could be a problematic relationship with gambling. That leap, though, sits squarely in the territory of social media opinion, not confirmed fact.
What’s clear is that a few seconds of video were enough to turn a simple family celebration into yet another Neymar talking point.
Why the clip is back now
The footage is not new. But it has surged back into circulation.
A fresh video showing Neymar’s ex-partner and his current partner cooking together has been doing the rounds, and with it came a wave of old content connected to the Brazilian star. Among the recycled material: that birthday scene, the poker, the phone, the candles.
The two moments are unrelated in time, yet social media stitched them together anyway, reviving the debate and pushing Neymar back into timelines for reasons far removed from the pitch.
All this while he cannot set foot on it.
Sidelined at Santos
Neymar is currently out injured at Santos, the club he rejoined on his return to Brazilian football and where he has extended his contract through December 2026.
In early September, during a match against Palmeiras, he suffered a Grade 2 injury to his right hamstring. Santos’ medical department set a recovery window of four to eight weeks, a spell that rules him out of the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals against Atlético Mineiro.
So, as his teammates prepare for knockout football without him, Neymar finds himself in a familiar but uncomfortable position: watched, judged and debated from a distance.
Right now, the only images of him in circulation are not of dribbles, goals or celebrations in front of a packed stadium. They are of a birthday party, a lit screen, and a hand holding a phone while a tiny girl blows out her candles.
For a player trying to relaunch his career back home, it raises a sharp question: when he finally returns to the pitch for Santos, will the conversation swing back to football, or will moments like this keep stealing the spotlight?
