Jose Mourinho's Insights on Real Madrid's Rising Stars

Jose Mourinho walked into the press room with a 4–1 win in his pocket and a bench full of headaches most managers would kill for.

Real Madrid had just swept aside Rayo Vallecano in the fifth round of La Liga, but Mourinho’s mind was already on the names that didn’t start, the talent that waited, and the balance he has to keep in a squad bursting with options.

Arda the game-changer

He didn’t wait long before singling out Arda Guler.

“Arda Guler plays a lot when he is on the pitch,” Mourinho said, underlining the Turk’s influence despite limited minutes. Brought on to steady the game, Guler did exactly that. Mourinho praised the way his young midfielder changed the rhythm and control of Madrid’s play.

“When he came on, he made the difference in the stability of the play,” he added. Not just energy. Structure. A substitute who doesn’t just add spark, but order.

For Mourinho, this is the new normal at Real Madrid: “On the bench you see nothing but quality. The changes will happen from one match to another.” In other words, nobody’s place is safe, and that includes the emerging stars as much as the established ones.

He was blunt about the selection dilemmas that come with such depth: “I will say with 100% certainty that if Diomande had not started today, the first question would have been: why is Diomande not playing?” Whatever he does, someone important sits.

Diomande’s raw promise

From Guler, Mourinho shifted to Yan Diomande, the latest project in this evolving Madrid side.

“I am a little too old to feel pressure because of a player's situation,” he said, making it clear he won’t be dictated to by outside noise. Diomande, still new to the highest level, is being handled carefully.

“He will improve gradually. He has little time at the top level, and he has a lot to learn tactically. But he possesses amazing potential.”

That potential, Mourinho insisted, is not just theoretical. Diomande already offers a toolkit that stretches across the front line.

“Diomande gives us many options in one-on-one duels, passing and shooting, and he can also play in Vini's position, and on the right side, just as Arda can play there or in Bellingham's position. At the moment, I want to help him develop.”

One player, several roles. It’s exactly the kind of versatility Mourinho loves, but it also raises the stakes. Every minute on the pitch is a step in his education; every omission is a talking point.

Vinicius near top speed

Then came the name that always carries weight at the Bernabéu: Vinicius.

Mourinho painted the picture of a player on the brink of something even bigger.

“Vinicius is in better physical shape than ever, but he is just one millimetre short of reaching his top speed,” he said. The numbers might not yet scream peak form, but the signs are there: constant runs, repeated sprints, relentless work.

“His ability to repeat efforts is immense. It is a process he is gradually absorbing,” Mourinho explained. The physical base is set; the fine-tuning is ongoing.

Mentally, the coach sees a leader. “Mentally, he is very strong, and he knows Real Madrid more than anyone else. He plays with great responsibility, which is the responsibility of playing for Real Madrid and the Brazil national team. He is calm. The goals will come.”

It was less a prediction than a warning to La Liga defenders. A Vinicius this fit, this focused, and still not quite at full throttle is a problem waiting to explode.
