José Mourinho's Bold Tactics Against Elche

José Mourinho has gone bold in Elche.

On a humid Tuesday night at the Manuel Martínez Valero, the Real Madrid coach has ripped up expectations and sent out an attacking side for the sixth round of La Liga – and left Jude Bellingham on the bench.

Bellingham benched as Mourinho leans on firepower

The headline is brutal in its simplicity: Bellingham sits. So does Bernardo Silva.

Instead, Mourinho turns to a front line loaded with pace and flair. Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Yan Diomandé and Arda Güler all start, a quartet that screams intent against an Elche side stranded near the foot of the table.

Aurélien Tchouaméni’s name jumps off the teamsheet as well. The French midfielder makes his first start of the season, back in the XI after a lengthy injury lay-off, and drops straight into the heart of midfield. Mourinho clearly trusts him to anchor a side built to attack.

It’s a blend of power, youth and star quality. Valverde’s engine, Tchouaméni’s presence and Güler’s craft behind a front three that can tear open space in an instant. On paper, it’s ruthless.

Elche look to resist from the bottom

Elche, second from bottom in nineteenth place with just two points, have no such luxury. They go with a compact, hard-working side built to survive long stretches without the ball and hope for moments on the break or from set pieces.

Whether that wall can hold against Mbappé, Vinícius and company – with Bellingham waiting in reserve – is another question entirely.
