Moisés Caicedo's Absence Against Arsenal: Key Midfielder Left Out

Moisés Caicedo was left out of Chelsea’s squad for their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday, Sept. 6, stripping Xabi Alonso of a key midfielder on a pivotal day at Stamford Bridge.

The Ecuador international had only just worked his way back from injury, which made his absence all the more jarring. He was already a surprise omission from Chelsea’s opener against Fulham, when Alonso revealed a “minor setback” had halted his progress.

That knock kept him out of the midweek Carabao Cup win over Luton Town. Then came a glimmer of hope: a brief return against Brighton last weekend. It lasted 14 minutes.

Caicedo came on as a second-half substitute against the Seagulls but had to be withdrawn, a worrying sight for a player whose energy and bite Chelsea rely on in the middle of the pitch. Alonso later admitted the problem “wasn’t something new,” a clear sign the issue had been lingering rather than suddenly appearing.

Even so, the plan was to push him as close as possible for Arsenal. And he got close.

“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” Alonso told Sky Sports before kick-off, underlining Chelsea’s decision to hold him back rather than gamble in a high-intensity London derby.

So Chelsea went into one of their biggest league fixtures of the season without their marquee ball-winner, choosing the long view over the temptation of a short-term boost. The question now is simple: when the next major test comes around, will Caicedo finally be ready to anchor the midfield again?
