Max Dowman Considered for England Senior Squad by Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel is seriously considering fast‑tracking Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman into England’s senior set-up as a spate of withdrawals threatens to stretch his Nations League plans to breaking point.

The 16-year-old, already a headline name at youth level, is under active consideration for a call into the senior training camp at St George’s Park ahead of a demanding four-game block against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.

Dowman is currently with England’s Under-19s, a short walk rather than a flight away from Harry Kane and the senior group. That proximity, and his form, have suddenly made him a live option.

A gap opens – and Dowman’s name is on the table

The door has swung open because Tuchel’s squad has been hit hard. Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of the upcoming international window with fitness problems, ripping five names out of the original list.

Tuchel is now weighing whether to bring Dowman across to train with the seniors during the break, dropping the teenager straight into sessions alongside Kane and the rest of England’s established core.

Dowman is scheduled to line up for the Under-19s against the Republic of Ireland on Friday, September 25. That fixture remains on his agenda, but the plan could now include a spell in front of Tuchel’s eyes at close quarters before England open their Nations League campaign.

For Dowman, it would be another jolt forward in a rise that has barely paused since he broke into Arsenal’s first-team picture.

Record-breaker with the club game at his feet

The midfielder made Premier League history in March, scoring against Everton at the Emirates Stadium to become the youngest goalscorer the competition has ever seen at 16 years and 73 days.

That wasn’t a one-off flash. This season he has kept his foot down, hitting two goals in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town earlier this month and reinforcing the sense that he belongs on big stages, not just youth pitches.

He did not make England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, which came too soon, but his performances for Arsenal have only strengthened the argument that he should be part of Tuchel’s long-term thinking.

There has been talk of a loan move to secure him more minutes this season. Sporting News reporting indicates, though, that Arsenal are more likely to keep him in-house, trusting his development under their own roof rather than sending him out.

If Tuchel does pull him into the senior camp, it will be a step that aligns with that club belief: expose him to the highest level, and let him grow there.

Tuchel’s plans reshaped by withdrawals

The England manager’s preparations have been heavily reshaped. Rice, the heartbeat of Arsenal’s midfield and a central figure for his country, has withdrawn because of concerns over his workload and fitness.

Palmer, who had only just forced his way back into the England picture after missing the World Cup, is out with a minor injury. Rashford and Mainoo, both from Manchester United, have also been sidelined by fitness issues. Livramento’s absence completes a bruising list of five enforced changes.

The Football Association moved quickly, confirming on Monday that Everton’s James Garner and Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White have been drafted in as replacements.

Those two give Tuchel extra cover in midfield and attack. Dowman, if invited, would offer something slightly different: a chance to assess a teenager who looks capable of jumping age groups without blinking, with Euro 2028 looming on the horizon.

That direction of travel is clear. Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha was already included in the original senior squad named on September 18, another bold nod towards youth and the future.

Heavyweight tests on the horizon

There is no gentle easing-in period for anyone stepping up. England launch their 2026-27 Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, a fixture that will test Tuchel’s reshaped squad immediately.

From there, they head to Prague to face Czechia on September 29, then travel to Rijeka to meet Croatia on October 3. The window closes with a return match against Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6.

By then, Tuchel will know whether this international break was simply about patching holes, or whether it marked the moment a 16-year-old from Arsenal took his first stride towards becoming a fixture in England’s future.
