Matthijs de Ligt's Manchester United Comeback After Surgery
Nearly a year after his season collapsed under the weight of a stubborn back injury, Matthijs de Ligt is finally edging back toward the stage where he belongs.
The Dutch centre-back has not played a competitive minute since November 2025, when the problem first forced him out and triggered a long, draining battle to avoid the operating table. Six months of conservative treatment, rehab, and false dawns followed. None of it worked.
In May, the inevitable decision arrived. Surgery. With it went his hopes of playing at the 2026 World Cup.
De Ligt admitted his frustration publicly at the time, laying bare the reality of a defender in his prime suddenly cut off from the game. “After six months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left,” he wrote, openly lamenting his inability to help Manchester United and his country on the biggest stage.
Now, at last, the tide has turned.
Back on the grass at Carrington
The 25-year-old is back in full training at Carrington and, crucially, is beginning to look like himself again. United’s medical staff are encouraged by his progress and expect him to be available for selection once the current international break ends.
For Michael Carrick, it cannot come soon enough.
The United manager, juggling injuries across his squad, name-checked De Ligt when discussing the club’s fitness picture after a 1-1 draw with Fulham. “Amad [Diallo], hopefully by the time we get back, he will have trained with the group. Matta [De Ligt] is working towards his fitness as well,” Carrick said, hinting at a defensive reinforcement finally moving into view.
United return to Premier League action against Tottenham Hotspur on October 10. Carrick has not promised De Ligt will feature against Spurs, but the fact the defender is back in team training suggests his first appearance of the season is now a matter of timing, not theory.
If he proves his match sharpness over the next couple of weeks, United’s back line instantly looks stronger, more authoritative, more secure.
Xavi’s eye on Oranje’s defensive pillar
De Ligt’s absence has not diminished his standing with the national team.
Under new Netherlands boss Xavi, the former Ajax captain remains central to the long-term plan. Speaking ahead of a demanding Nations League run against Germany, Serbia, and Greece, the Barcelona legend made it clear he is tracking the defender’s rehabilitation closely.
“Yes, we’re in touch with him and Manchester United,” Xavi said. “He’s been through a tough time. I’ve also been in touch with Frenkie de Jong and Xavi Simons recently. We need all our players, especially these guys.”
The message was unmistakable: De Ligt is not just another name on a list.
“He’s doing well. We are checking how are they. We want to check because we need all the players. In this case, De Ligt is an important player. He could be important in the future,” Xavi added, underlining his belief that the centre-back will again anchor the Oranje defence once fully fit.
For a player who missed a World Cup because of his back, those words matter. They signal trust, patience, and a clear path back into the international fold—provided he delivers for United first.
A test of resilience, a chance to reset
The past year has stretched De Ligt mentally as much as physically. The operation he tried so hard to avoid, the long rehab, the World Cup slipping away—it all collided into the kind of setback that can derail a career or redefine it.
Now comes the decisive phase.
If De Ligt can translate his progress at Carrington into minutes on the pitch and prove he can withstand the intensity of the Premier League again, United gain the defensive leader they signed him to be. Xavi gains the cornerstone of his future Netherlands backline.
After a year of watching from the sidelines, the next few weeks will tell whether this is simply a return—or the start of a new chapter for one of Europe’s most scrutinised defenders.
