Marshall Football Triumphs Over VCU 3-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, and then tore through VCU.

Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered strikes to beat the Rams 3-1 on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, stretching their unbeaten start to 2-0-2.

Early error, early punishment

Marshall’s night started with a jolt.

A defensive mistake left VCU’s Ty Johnson clean through on goal. He calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapped it in, silencing the home crowd and handing the visitors a 1-0 lead before the match had even settled.

On the touchline, Head Coach Chris Grassie watched a team still learning itself.

“We have a lot of new players. I think it takes time to gel and get the things we need,” Grassie said. “The way we pass balls is our communication. We make actions on the field, we move in a certain motion. We're always communicating with our teammates around us and I think that communication has moments of pure clarity and moments of confusion. I think we have to ride this out. There's a very good team in there somewhere, but we have to go through the rigors to make sure we gel and get our communication spot on.”

His players responded.

Apolinario stunner flips the mood

Eight minutes after going behind, Marshall found its spark from distance.

Goncalo Machado slipped a pass to Thiago Apolinario, who glanced up from nearly 40 yards out and let fly. His strike caught VCU goalkeeper Manuel Monteiro off guard, screaming into the net for Apolinario’s third goal of the season and a 1-1 game.

The goal changed the temperature of the night. VCU still carried a threat, though.

The Rams carved out chances through the rest of the first half, but Obert stood firm. His best moment before the break came in the 31st minute, when he turned away a dangerous effort to preserve the 1-1 scoreline at halftime.

Roberto swings it, Obert protects it

Marshall came out of the locker room sharper, and the reward arrived quickly.

Just under five minutes into the second half, at the 49:26 mark, a deflection fell to Joao Roberto just outside the 18-yard box. He pounced, driving his shot past Monteiro to give the Herd their first lead of the night at 2-1.

From there, the match tightened. VCU chased, Marshall countered, and Obert’s gloves grew more important with every minute.

The Marshall keeper delivered again in the 59th minute, then produced another key save in the 85th to deny the Rams an equalizer and protect the slender advantage.

Romberg slams the door

With VCU pushing late, one more mistake proved fatal for the visitors.

In the 90th minute, a Rams error left Carl Romberg alone in on goal. He made no mistake, slotting home the third Marshall goal to seal the 3-1 victory and send the home fans into full voice.

Marshall stays at Hoops Family Field on Friday night, hosting Utah Valley at 7:15 p.m., carrying momentum and still searching, as Grassie put it, for that “very good team in there somewhere” to fully emerge.
