Marli Salmon Withdraws from England Under-18 Squad Due to Injury

Arsenal’s teenage defender Marli Salmon has been forced to pull out of the England Under-18 squad after suffering an injury, halting his rapid rise just as it was gathering pace.

The 17-year-old, highly regarded inside the club, had only just enjoyed his first senior appearance of the season, coming off the bench in Arsenal’s 4-2 EFL Cup win over Ipswich Town last Tuesday. That outing was meant to be the springboard. Next on the ladder: a first cap for England’s Under-18s.

Instead, the wait goes on.

Salmon’s step up put on hold

Salmon, who has already made four appearances for England Under-17s, had been named in Will Antwi’s Under-18 squad for a trio of friendlies against Colombia, Egypt and South Korea. It would have been his first involvement at that age group, a natural progression for a defender whose stock has been steadily rising in north London.

The momentum has been checked. An injury has forced him to withdraw from the camp, with the exact nature of the problem yet to be disclosed. England have moved quickly, with Chelsea defender Gabriel Sambou drafted in as his replacement. Sambou, like Salmon, is no stranger to the youth international scene, having represented both Poland and England at junior level.

For Salmon, the focus now shifts back to Arsenal and recovery work at the club. Provided the issue is not serious, the plan is straightforward: a return for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 against Sunderland on October 10. That date carries an extra layer of intrigue, as it coincides with Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Leeds. If his progress continues to impress, Mikel Arteta could yet decide that Salmon’s next step comes with the senior squad instead.

England withdrawals stack up

News of Salmon’s withdrawal arrived on the same day another Arsenal player stepped back from international duty. Declan Rice has also pulled out of Thomas Tuchel’s senior England squad, his absence understood to be down to load management after a relentless year.

Rice played 55 games for Arsenal last season and added seven more at the World Cup. This term, the 27-year-old has already started six of the club’s eight matches, including all five in the Premier League. The numbers tell their own story. England and Arsenal have decided not to push it any further, at least for this window.

There was another fitness concern on the international front too, with defender Piero Hincapie left out of Ecuador’s squad due to worries over his condition.

For Arsenal, the picture is mixed. One rising talent temporarily sidelined, one midfield cornerstone carefully protected. The next few weeks will show whether that caution keeps their season on track or simply underlines how fine the margins have become.
