Maresca's Tactical Shuffle Ahead of Porto Clash

Enzo Maresca is not in the mood to play it safe. Not with Porto away on Tuesday and a Manchester derby looming on the horizon.

The Manchester City head coach is expected to shuffle his pack for the Champions League league-phase clash at the Estadio do Dragao, and that could mean a step back for one of his biggest names: Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez facing early reality check

Fernandez, a £125m signing, was initially set to start on the bench against Coventry City in the Premier League on Saturday. His full debut came earlier than planned when Nico O'Reilly pulled up with a back problem in the warm-up, forcing a late reshuffle.

Thrown straight into the XI, Fernandez lasted 76 minutes in midfield alongside Elliot Anderson. It was a solid first outing, but with just three days between fixtures and the intensity about to spike again in Europe, Maresca is unlikely to run him into the ground.

The schedule is unforgiving. Porto away, then a derby. This is exactly why City have built such depth, and this is exactly when a coach has to use it.

Bouaddi ready for the stage

Ayyoub Bouaddi looks perfectly placed to benefit. The young midfielder arrives with Champions League experience from his time at Lille, and Maresca can trust him to handle the tempo and the noise in Portugal.

Bouaddi’s introduction could be one of up to four changes from the side that beat Coventry. It would allow Fernandez to step out of the firing line without turning the midfield into an experiment.

Foden primed, Ndiaye cramping, Doku still out

Further up the pitch, there was a minor scare for Iliman Ndiaye at the weekend. His debut ended in the 87th minute due to cramp, a reminder of the physical jump and the demands of Maresca’s system.

The early signs suggest the Senegalese forward should be available for the trip, but his place in the starting XI is far from guaranteed. A fully-fit Phil Foden is pushing hard to come back in, and this kind of European night feels tailor-made for his sharpness between the lines.

Jeremy Doku, however, remains unavailable with a calf problem, so Maresca’s options out wide are still slightly restricted. That only sharpens the focus on Foden’s return.

Fresh legs at full-back

At full-back, there is another decision to make. Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol started in those roles against Coventry, but Maresca has Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri ready to rotate in and add energy on the flanks.

With Porto likely to test City’s defensive structure through William Gomes and Pepe, fresher legs out wide could be decisive. Nunes offers thrust and ball-carrying from deep, while Ait-Nouri brings balance and composure on the opposite side.

How City could line up

All of that points towards a side that looks something like this:

Donnarumma; Nunes, Guehi, Dias, Ait-Nouri; Anderson, Bouaddi; Semenyo, Cherki, Foden; Haaland.

It is still a heavyweight XI, even with a potential demotion for Fernandez and a reshaped back line. Maresca is not weakening his side; he is rotating with intent.

Porto away, Manchester derby next. This is the stretch where City’s depth stops being a theory and starts deciding their season.
