Manchester United U19s 5–0 Sabah FK: Gabriel's Hat-Trick Shines in Youth League Opener

Manchester United’s next generation tore into the UEFA Youth League with a statement win, sweeping aside Sabah FK 5–0 at Leigh Sports Village in a one-sided opener that felt over almost as soon as it began.

This is the competition that shadows the senior side’s Champions League group, but on Thursday afternoon it belonged entirely to the youngsters in red.

Lightning start

Barely two minutes had passed when United were in front. Jim Thwaites whipped in a wide free-kick, fizzed with just enough pace and menace, and Amir Ibragimov darted across the near post to glance it home. Simple, sharp, ruthless.

Sabah barely had time to reset before United came again. JJ Gabriel, already bristling with intent, let fly from the edge of the area. His rising drive looked destined for the top corner until the visiting goalkeeper clawed it over.

The pattern was set. United camped in Sabah’s half, the visitors surviving on scraps and the odd burst forward. When they did break, it was usually through the tireless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who repeatedly surged into space only to find a wall of red shirts and no support.

The pressure finally told again on 16 minutes. Bendito Mantato drove a low ball across the box, it skipped through bodies and rolled invitingly to Jacob Watson. On his weaker right foot, he didn’t hesitate, drilling United’s second into the net.

There was a brief setback for the hosts as Godwill Kukonki, making his first start of the season, rolled his ankle and had to be replaced by Rafe McCormack on 20 minutes. The change did nothing to alter the flow of the game.

United simply kept coming.

As the interval approached, Gabriel got the goal his performance demanded. Junior Brown saw his effort blocked inside the area, the ball broke loose, and Gabriel reacted quickest, pouncing to slam in United’s third just before the whistle.

3–0 at half-time. It could have been more.

Gabriel takes over

The second half brought no respite for Sabah. United’s intensity barely dipped, and the chances kept stacking up.

Brown almost produced the pick of the goals when he cut in from the left, opened his body and bent a gorgeous effort towards the top-right corner. The technique was perfect; the save was even better, the Sabah keeper flying across to tip it away and deny a spectacular strike.

United’s dominance was absolute. Sabah, though, clung on and delayed the inevitable. For a while.

As the clock ticked into the final stages, Gabriel struck again. Inside the box, he coolly shifted the ball past his marker and passed it into the far-right corner with the calm of a seasoned finisher. 4–0, and still time left.

Then came the flourish.

Thwaites, already with an assist to his name, threaded a stunning through ball straight between the Sabah centre-backs. Gabriel burst onto it, clear of the backline, and made no mistake, rolling his shot past the keeper to complete his hat-trick and cap a dominant 5–0 victory.

By the final whistle, the numbers underlined what everyone inside Leigh Sports Village had seen: United racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah did not register a single effort against Cameron Byrne-Hughes.

A mismatch on paper. On the pitch, it looked even more brutal.
