Manchester United Face Early-Season Pressure Against Ipswich Town

Manchester United are already under pressure. And they will have to dig themselves out of this early-season hole without a raft of key players when Ipswich Town arrive at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s side were stunned on the opening weekend, beaten 2-0 by a Hull City team widely tipped for relegation. A flat performance, a flat atmosphere, and a fanbase already anxious about what this season might become.

Since then, United have made a statement in the market, landing Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion in a £70million deal. He was supposed to inject power and purpose into midfield. Instead, he joins the growing list of absentees.

United’s injury list grows

Carrick will be without at least five senior players for the visit of the newly promoted Tractor Boys.

Amad Diallo is out after picking up a minor injury in training, one that kept him sidelined for the defeat at Hull and will rule him out again. Carrick was blunt about the winger’s chances: “Amad won't be involved, he'll be out for a little bit longer.”

Mason Mount will also miss out, though there is at least a sliver of optimism around him. “Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive,” Carrick said. Encouraging, but not enough to throw him straight back into a game United cannot afford to botch.

Baleba, the big-money arrival, will have to wait for his debut. The club knew about his ankle problem before completing the transfer, and Carrick does not expect him to feature for a couple of weeks. “He's got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks. We knew that before. It's no major issue. It'll be great to have him back.”

At the back, long-term absentee Matthijs De Ligt is edging closer but still not ready. The Dutch defender has been out for an extended spell, and though he is now back in training, Carrick is not prepared to rush him.

“Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time. But he's training and it's great to have him back. He won't be involved, but he's in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that's a good bonus for us really, at this stage, to have him back.”

Even the goalkeeping department has taken a hit. Veteran backup Tom Heaton remains unavailable after picking up an injury in the pre-season friendly against PSG. There is no clear timeframe yet for his return.

For a team already reeling from an opening-day shock, it is hardly the platform Carrick wanted.

Ipswich arrive with belief – and problems of their own

Ipswich Town, written off as heavy underdogs before a ball was kicked this season, did not get the memo. They opened their Premier League campaign with a win over Sunderland, immediately changing the tone around their return to the top flight.

Gary O’Neil brings a side to Old Trafford that has momentum, organisation and nothing to lose. But he, too, must juggle absences.

Jaden Philogene, who missed the win over Sunderland, is still out with an ankle injury. Florentino Luis, another key figure, remains sidelined by a calf issue after also sitting out the Black Cats clash.

Azor Matusiwa, absent last week, will not feature either as he continues to nurse a thigh problem. Jack Taylor stays on the treatment table with a knee injury, having already missed the Premier League opener.

Four down for Ipswich, five out for United. Nine players missing in total.

A fragile moment at Old Trafford

On paper, this is the kind of fixture Manchester United are expected to control. Newly promoted opposition, home crowd, big names in the squad even with the injuries.

But the reality is different. United are wounded, short of options in key areas, and facing an Ipswich team that has already shown it can tear up the script.

Carrick has spoken of positives in training and players “moving in a good direction.” The supporters will want something more tangible: a reaction, a performance, a result.

With so many absentees, there are no excuses left. Only a question: does this United side have the resilience to turn the mood around before the season starts to slip away?
