Manchester United vs Manchester City: Key Derby Line-Up Insights

Manchester United go into this afternoon’s derby with Manchester City at Old Trafford knowing exactly what is at stake. Win, and their Premier League campaign suddenly has a launchpad. Lose, and the questions return.

Michael Carrick has not treated it like any other league game. His team sheet screams intent.

Carrick rolls the dice

Four players who were rested for the 4-0 Champions League rout of Sabah on Thursday are straight back in. Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford all return, while Luke Shaw, also left out in midweek, misses out entirely, with injury fears around him now effectively confirmed by his absence.

Senne Lammens keeps his place in goal after that comfortable European night.

In front of him, Dalot slots back in on the right of defence, with Maguire restored at centre-back. They join Lisandro Martinez and Patrick Dorgu, both of whom got through the bulk of the 90 minutes against the Azerbaijani side and go again here.

Nous Mazraoui and Leny Yoro, starters in midweek, drop to the bench. Matthijs de Ligt remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from back surgery.

Midfield settled, attack reshaped

Carrick sticks with the same midfield axis. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans stay together in the double pivot, a pairing that has quickly become the manager’s preferred blend of control and progression.

Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes once more wears the No 10 role, the creative hub tasked with threading United’s attacks in the tightest of spaces.

Out wide, there is a significant change of pace. Bryan Mbeumo starts on the right, with Amad still sidelined as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. On the opposite flank, Rashford is restored to the XI, a key decision in a game where United will need both his running in behind and his edge on the counter.

Through the middle, Carrick keeps faith with Matheus Cunha as a false nine. It’s a bold call. Ben Sesko, who has scored in each of his last two games, drops to the bench despite that form. Cunha’s movement between the lines wins out over Sesko’s penalty-box presence.

Bench options

Karl Darlow is named as the substitute goalkeeper. Defensive cover comes from Mazraoui, Yoro and Ayden Heaven.

Further forward, Carrick has a mix of youth, control and firepower to turn to: Shea Lacey, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos, Josh Zirkzee and Sesko.

United have the talent. They have the crowd. Now they have a line-up built to attack the champions.
