Manchester United vs Leeds: Pre-Season Test in Dublin

Manchester United step into Croke Park this evening with the Premier League looming into view and little time left to fine-tune. Leeds provide the opposition in Dublin, but Michael Carrick’s eyes are already half on Hull City on August 22 and the demands of a long season.

This is United’s penultimate pre-season outing. The experimentation phase is just about over. Now it is about minutes, rhythm and answers.

Carrick weighs up defensive reshuffle

Senne Lammens is expected to return in goal after illness ruled him out of the clash with Paris Saint-Germain. The Belgian has yet to start this summer, and Dublin offers a timely chance to stake a claim.

At right-back, Noussair Mazraoui began against PSG, yet Carrick may hand those minutes to Diogo Dalot, who still needs a proper run-out to sharpen up. Ayden Heaven struggled at the weekend, which opens the door for a change at centre-back. Drafting in Leny Yoro alongside Harry Maguire would give United a different balance and a sterner look in the heart of defence.

Midfield puzzle after Mount scare

In midfield, Andrey Santos and Mason Mount have quietly built a promising understanding across pre-season. That rhythm was disrupted in Gothenburg when Mount was withdrawn midway through the first half, raising immediate concern.

Both Mount and Carrick were quick to stress the change was precautionary. Even so, with the season so close, there is no need to gamble. Youri Tielemans is waiting for his first start of the summer and pairing him with Santos would offer a strong, composed axis against Leeds while allowing Mount to be managed carefully.

Bruno returns, Lacey waits his turn

Captain Bruno Fernandes tasted his first minutes of the summer at the weekend and is expected to step straight into the No.10 role here. That would push youngster Shea Lacey out of the starting XI, but not out of the picture.

Lacey has impressed enough to remain firmly in the first-team conversation. The expectation inside the club is that his involvement will grow as the campaign unfolds, even if Dublin belongs to Fernandes.

Rashford back, but not yet leading the line

Marcus Rashford has rejoined the squad in Dublin, his future still unresolved but his presence significant. He has been reintegrated into the group this week, yet a starting spot tonight looks unlikely.

The same applies to Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, both recently back from World Cup duty. Their reintroduction will be managed, not rushed, with Hull and the grind of the Premier League the real target.

Wide options and illness calls

On the right, Amad did enough on Saturday to keep his place. Sharp, direct and involved, he has momentum on his side and a strong performance against Leeds would only strengthen his case for competitive minutes.

The left flank is less settled. Patrick Dorgu has been learning the role and Carrick may decide that continuity is best for his development. Yet Matheus Cunha is another option, provided he has shaken off the illness that troubled him at the weekend. If, like Lammens, he is back to full health, he offers a different profile from the left.

Up front, a waiting game on Sesko

Carrick would love nothing more than to unleash Benjamin Sesko as his starting centre-forward. The reality is harsher: Sesko has not played since the win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last season. Throwing him straight in now would be a risk.

That leaves Bryan Mbeumo as the obvious choice through the middle. He has been one of United’s standout performers in pre-season, sharp and reliable in front of goal. With Sesko still short of full fitness, starting Mbeumo at Croke Park feels less like a stopgap and more like the logical call.

Two games left, questions still to answer. Dublin will reveal who is really ready when the serious stuff starts.
