Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Carrick Seeks Urgent Response

Manchester United walk into their second Premier League game of the season under pressure already, and it’s only August.

A 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City on the opening day did more than sting. Hull, up via the playoffs, made United look like the side feeling its way into the division. Michael Carrick cannot afford a repeat against another promoted club, Ipswich Town.

The mood around Old Trafford has shifted from cautious optimism to early-season urgency.

Baleba arrives, but debut may wait

Since that loss, United have moved to address a glaring issue in midfield.

Carlos Baleba has arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion, the first genuine defensive midfielder in this squad for some time. On paper, he is exactly what Carrick’s system has been crying out for: energy, aggression, and protection in front of the back four.

But timing is not on his side.

Baleba is still recovering from an ankle ligament injury picked up during Brighton’s pre-season. He is expected to be back to full fitness before the end of September and will likely work individually before joining full sessions. A debut against Ipswich looks unlikely.

His potential return date has been pencilled in for Saturday, 10 October, at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

United may have solved a long-term problem, but the short-term fix will have to come from within.

Amad blow adds to attacking concerns

Carrick’s options in the final third have taken a hit.

Amad missed the Hull City defeat after playing in United’s final pre-season outing against AC Milan. Roundtable understands the winger could be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering an injury in training.

The projected return? Also Saturday, 10 October, against Tottenham.

His absence strips United of a direct, inventive option from wide areas at a time when they badly need unpredictability in attack.

Mount edges back

There is, at least, one positive on the fitness front.

Mason Mount limped out before the 20-minute mark against Paris Saint-Germain in pre-season after a knock to the foot. He was later seen leaving the stadium without a limp, but he played no part against Leeds United, AC Milan, or Hull City.

He was described as “touch and go” for the Hull game. Now, Sam Cohen reports that Mount has trained with the first-team squad ahead of the Ipswich clash.

The expectation is that he will be available on Sunday, 30 August, against Ipswich Town. Whether Carrick throws him straight back into the starting XI or uses him from the bench could shape United’s tempo and creativity.

De Ligt’s slow road back

At the back, there is a longer-running concern.

Matthijs de Ligt has not featured since suffering a back injury in November 2025. At the time, Rúben Amorim suggested the Dutch defender might be out for only a week. That optimism has long since evaporated.

De Ligt has now been seen training with the first-team group, but these look like the early stages of a careful rehabilitation. Back injuries demand patience, not risk.

United are tentatively looking at late October for his return, a timeline that underlines how long Carrick has had to juggle his defensive resources.

Same squad, different attitude?

Strip it all back and the picture for Ipswich is clear.

Carrick is likely to name a squad very similar to the one that lost at Hull. Baleba is expected to wait. Amad remains out. De Ligt is still working his way back. Mount is the main variable, back on the grass and pushing for involvement.

The personnel may barely change. The performance cannot.

Against another newly-promoted side, United are already fighting to prove that last weekend was a jolt, not a warning.
