Manchester United Face Injury Crisis Ahead of Ipswich Clash

Manchester United will limp into their Old Trafford opener on Sunday, with Michael Carrick deprived of at least nine players as Ipswich arrive looking to spoil the mood.

United’s season started with a jolt – a flat 2-0 defeat at Hull – and the pressure is already on Carrick to deliver a response. The performance at the MKM Stadium raised familiar questions. Now he must find answers with a patched‑up squad.

New £70m signing forced to wait

The headline arrival of the week, Carlos Baleba, will not be part of that response.

United sealed a £70million deal with Brighton for the midfielder, but an ankle problem from pre-season means the debut will have to wait. Carrick made it clear the club knew the risk when they signed him.

"He's got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks. We knew that before. It's no major issue. It'll be great to have him back," the United boss said.

For now, Baleba is another name on an already crowded absentee list.

Amad and Mount take different paths

Amad will also be missing. The £37m signing from 2021, who sat out the defeat at Hull, is still nursing a minor training-ground injury and won’t feature against Ipswich.

"Amad won't be involved, he'll be out for a little bit longer," Carrick confirmed, a blunt update that underlines United’s lack of attacking depth.

There is better news with Mason Mount. The midfielder, who has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines, has stepped back into full training and is edging closer to involvement, even if Sunday comes too soon.

"Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive," Carrick said, hinting that Mount’s return could be a key boost in the coming weeks.

De Ligt close, but not quite ready

At the back, Matthijs De Ligt remains unavailable, though the tone around the Dutch defender is shifting.

"Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time," Carrick said. "But he's training and it's great to have him back. He won't be involved, but he's in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that's a good bonus for us really, at this stage, to have him back."

United have missed his authority and presence. For now, they must continue without it, but his return is at least on the horizon.

Heaton out as keeper options thin

Even the goalkeeping department has not escaped unscathed. Veteran reserve Tom Heaton will also sit out after picking up an injury in the pre-season friendly against PSG.

Carrick has not put a timescale on Heaton’s recovery, leaving United to juggle their options behind the first-choice keeper in the early weeks of the campaign.

Ipswich travel with problems of their own

Ipswich arrive with momentum after their win over Sunderland, but Kieran McKenna’s side are not untouched by injury.

Jaden Philogene, who missed the Sunderland victory with an ankle issue, remains sidelined. Florentino Luis is out again with a calf injury, having also sat out the Black Cats clash.

Azor Matusiwa, another absentee last weekend, is still unavailable due to a thigh problem, trimming McKenna’s midfield choices for the trip to Old Trafford.

Both managers, then, go into Sunday’s game short-handed. For Carrick, though, there is no hiding place. A wounded squad, a restless crowd, and a season that cannot afford to stall after one game – how long can United lean on injuries before results have to speak for themselves?
