Manchester United's Crucial Match Against Fulham: Predicted XI and Fitness Updates

Manchester United’s trip to Fulham on Sunday already feels like a crossroads, and Michael Carrick knows it.

Two straight defeats at Old Trafford – first to a 10-man Manchester City in the league, then a Carabao Cup collapse against Brighton after racing into a 2-0 lead – have darkened the mood around Carrington. Publicly, Carrick has brushed off what he called “ridiculous” rumours about his future. Privately, everyone understands the stakes: go into the international break on the back of another setback, and the noise only grows louder.

On Friday, the head coach offered a few clues about how he plans to steady the ship at Craven Cottage.

Shaw and Baleba close, but not quite ready

The biggest fitness updates centred on Luke Shaw and Carlos Baleba. Both are edging back, both are still short.

“A chance for both of them. Not totally 100% on either,” Carrick said, via the Manchester Evening News. On Shaw, he added it was “really short-term” but still a race against time for Sunday.

The message was clear enough. Shaw and Baleba might make the squad, but throwing either straight into a high-pressure away game looks unlikely. That points to another start for Patrick Dorgu at left-back, even after a shaky derby display, with Harry Amass seemingly out of contention.

On the opposite flank, right-back remains a headache. Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot have both struggled for form in recent outings. Carrick is unlikely to gamble by using them together in some kind of reshuffle, but he has no alternative specialists in the role. Dalot is expected to keep his place as the nominal first choice.

Maguire and Martinez to restore order

The midweek defeat to Brighton did little for the reputations of Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro. Both youngsters endured a difficult night, and with pressure rising, Carrick is expected to revert to experience.

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez should return as the central pairing, tasked with bringing some authority and composure back to a back line that has looked fragile and uncertain in recent days.

Behind them, Lammens is set to continue in goal, with United sticking to the 4-2-3-1 shape that Carrick has favoured.

Midfield settled while Baleba waits

If the defence looks in flux, the midfield picture is clearer.

Andrey Santos did not take his chance against Brighton and is likely to drop out, opening the door for Kobbie Mainoo to come back into the XI. The young midfielder is expected to resume his partnership with Youri Tielemans, who remains a key figure while Baleba works back towards full fitness.

Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes will once again carry the creative burden in the No.10 role. The captain’s influence will be crucial in a game where United cannot afford to drift or lose control for long spells.

Lacey stakes his claim, Sesko under threat

If there was one bright spark in the Brighton defeat, it was Shea Lacey. The teenager was arguably United’s standout performer on Wednesday, and that may be enough to earn him a start on the right wing at Craven Cottage.

His inclusion would trigger a reshuffle in attack. With Lacey wide, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to lead the line, with Benjamin Sesko likely to make way after an ineffective run of games. United need cutting edge; Mbeumo’s work rate and movement could give them just that.

On the left, Matheu Cunha and Marcus Rashford are set to battle for one spot. Rashford has started two matches in four days and has struggled to impose himself. Carrick may decide a change is needed, handing Cunha the chance to bring fresh energy and a different angle of attack.

Predicted Manchester United XI vs Fulham

Carrick is not ripping everything up, but this feels like a team picked with both trust and urgency in mind:

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Dorgu; Tielemans, Mainoo; Lacey, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.

The margins are already thin this early in the season. At Craven Cottage, Carrick’s selection will be judged not just on how it looks on paper, but on whether it can finally turn the tide.
