Manchester United Seek Defensive Reset Against Brighton in Carabao Cup

Manchester United walk back into Old Trafford tonight still stung by derby defeat and a decision that will not leave the conversation any time soon. Erling Haaland’s contentious winner for Manchester City split opinion and left United with nothing from a game they felt should have finished level.

Now comes Brighton in the Carabao Cup, and with it the chance to reset – and to finally welcome back some badly missed defenders.

Shaw and De Ligt near long-awaited returns

Luke Shaw is edging towards a return and United would dearly love to see him involved, even if only briefly. The left-back’s absence has stripped balance and composure from the back line. If he is passed fit, Michael Carrick is expected to give him minutes, both to sharpen him up and to ease the strain on those who have been covering.

Matthijs de Ligt is also closing in on his comeback after a back injury that has sidelined him since November last year. His lay-off has been a major blow. United have looked vulnerable at the start of this campaign, their defensive line far more porous than Carrick would tolerate with the Dutchman available. Even the hint of his return lifts the mood around the back four.

Rotation on Carrick’s mind

With a league trip to Fulham looming on Sunday and a three-week international break on the other side of it, Carrick is expected to shuffle his pack. The Carabao Cup offers room for that.

Senne Lammens is likely to make way in goal, with Karl Darlow in line for a start between the posts. At right-back, Diogo Dalot’s shaky afternoon against City could open the door for Noussair Mazraoui to step in and stake his claim.

Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire have been Carrick’s trusted centre-back pairing so far, but both may be spared here. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are ready to come in, a chance for fresh legs and fresh energy in a position that has taken a physical and mental battering in recent weeks.

If Shaw is deemed ready, he should slot in at left-back and get valuable minutes. That would free Patrick Dorgu to push higher up the pitch.

Dorgu pushed forward, Rashford rested?

Dorgu, the Denmark international, could be unleashed as a natural winger on the left in Carrick’s 4-2-3-1. That would allow Marcus Rashford a rare breather after a heavy workload. It also gives United a different profile out wide: more direct, more traditional, less hybrid full-back.

On the right, the options are thinner. Amad Diallo’s ankle injury has left United light on that flank. Bryan Mbeumo may have to start again, even if Carrick would ideally rotate him too. Youngster Shea Lacey is another possibility, an intriguing one, but this is a tie United can hardly afford to treat lightly given the current mood.

Midfield balance and the No 10 call

In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans have emerged as Carrick’s preferred double pivot. They bring control, passing range and a calmness United have badly needed. Yet this is also the sort of fixture where the manager can manage minutes. Andrey Santos is pushing for involvement and could be handed game time to keep Mainoo and Tielemans fresh for Fulham.

Carlos Baleba, the other summer midfield recruit, remains sidelined with an ankle issue, so the rotation options are not limitless.

Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes is expected to keep his place as the No 10. He rarely sits out, particularly when United are chasing rhythm and confidence. Mason Mount, though, is waiting in the wings after going unused against City. If Carrick wants to change the dynamic or simply give his captain a rest, Mount offers a ready-made alternative.

United need a performance as much as a result. A cup tie under the lights, returning defenders, and a squad on the turn – this is where their season either steadies, or the questions get a lot louder.
