Manchester City Aim for Premier League Top Spot Against Crystal Palace

Manchester City head to Selhurst Park tonight with the table in their sights and a few early-season questions still hanging over them.

Enzo Maresca’s side can go top of the Premier League with a win over Crystal Palace and make it two victories from two, but nothing about this trip feels straightforward. City needed a late rescue act to turn things around against Bournemouth on the opening day at the Etihad. Palace, beaten at Everton, now get the chance to bite back in front of their own crowd, where they are rarely obliging hosts.

This is still a City team under construction. Maresca is trying to weld new ideas onto a squad being reshaped in real time, with more signings expected before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. The first outing was clunky, disjointed at times, and the manager’s team sheet tonight will say a lot about how ruthless he’s prepared to be this early in his reign.

Defensive rethink on the cards

Gianluigi Donnarumma keeps his place in goal, but the back line is where the surgery is likely to come.

City looked vulnerable against Bournemouth, and Maresca’s defensive experiment with Marc Guehi did little to convince. The England international is expected to move back into his natural role in the centre of defence to restore some order. Ruben Dias is likely to join him as the senior partner, giving City a more orthodox and experienced pairing in front of Donnarumma.

That reshuffle could cost Josko Gvardiol his spot. The matchwinner on opening day may find himself the unlucky casualty of Maresca’s search for balance, with Nico O'Reilly tipped to drop back to left back after being pushed into an attacking midfield role last weekend.

On the opposite side, the right flank poses a different kind of dilemma. Rico Lewis wants to operate in midfield and his defensive struggles against Bournemouth only underlined that preference. With Matheus Nunes still short of full sharpness — Maresca has already admitted the Portugal international is “not 100 per cent” — the door opens for Abdukodir Khusanov to step in at right back and give the back four a more specialist feel.

Midfield spark and a reward for Cherki

The changes are unlikely to stop at defence.

Elliot Anderson is fit and ready to start, offering legs and energy in midfield. Mateo Kovacic, who had to settle for a place among the substitutes on the opening day, is in line to come in alongside the club’s record signing and add some control in the middle of the pitch.

Ahead of them, one name demands promotion. Rayan Cherki came off the bench against Bournemouth and flipped the game on its head, injecting the creativity and urgency City had been missing. He is expected to be rewarded with a start in the number 10 role, the kind of central platform that allows him to dictate attacks and link with the front line.

That tweak would keep Phil Foden out wide once again. With Jeremy Doku still unavailable, Foden should operate from one flank, carrying the responsibility of drifting inside and unlocking Palace’s compact shape. On the other wing, Antoine Semenyo offers direct running and aggression, a contrast that stretches defences and frees space for the man everyone looks for in the middle.

Erling Haaland, of course, leads the line. One game, one win, no goal yet for the Norwegian — and he will not enjoy that statistic. At a ground where visiting strikers are often dragged into a scrap, Haaland’s battle with Palace’s centre-backs will set the tone for City’s night.

Top spot is there for Maresca’s side if they get it right. The real intrigue is whether this evolving City can find fluency quickly, or whether Selhurst Park becomes the first real stress test of their new era.
