Madjo Injured Before Premier League Start for Aston Villa

Teenage sensation Madjo will miss the start of Aston Villa’s Premier League season after suffering an injury in the UEFA Super Cup against PSG, according to The Athletic, cutting short a breakout week that had electrified the club.

The 17-year-old forward had announced himself in spectacular fashion, scoring Villa’s only goal against the French champions and becoming the youngest scorer in the competition’s history. One stunning finish, one new record, and suddenly a new star seemed to have arrived.

Then came the diagnosis.

Madjo is now expected to be sidelined until at least September, a brutal setback for Unai Emery just a week before the league campaign begins. For a manager who had carefully integrated the youngster across pre-season, shaping him into a genuine option rather than a token academy inclusion, the timing could hardly be worse.

Emery’s attack stripped back

Madjo’s injury forces Emery into an urgent rethink of his forward line. The teenager, who had shone throughout pre-season, will not only miss the Premier League curtain-raiser away to Brighton on Sunday, August 23, but is also set to sit out a demanding early run of fixtures.

On current estimates, he will be unavailable for the clashes with Arsenal and Hull City, as well as games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham on September 19. That is a significant slice of the opening schedule gone for a player Villa had hoped could inject pace, unpredictability, and goals from the off.

The emergency leaves Ollie Watkins as the clear attacking focal point, with Tammy Abraham now the only other senior centre-forward at Emery’s disposal. Every minute, every sprint, every duel in those opening weeks will fall heavily on that pair. One injury, one suspension, and the front line starts to look alarmingly bare.

Midfield crisis deepens

The problems do not stop there. Villa’s fitness concerns have worsened with a fresh blow to new signing Joao Gomes, who picked up an injury in the aftermath of the PSG clash. He is expected to be out for between two and four weeks, stripping Emery of another key piece in an area of the pitch that already looked stretched.

Joao Gomes’ absence adds to a growing list. Amadou Onana is sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered at the World Cup, removing a powerful presence from the heart of midfield. The loss of Youri Tielemans earlier in the summer, after the creative midfielder left for Manchester United, had already robbed Villa of their main playmaking hub.

Take Tielemans’ guile out, remove Onana’s physicality, and now subtract Joao Gomes’ energy. The spine that was supposed to carry Villa into the new season suddenly looks worryingly thin.

Early test of Villa’s depth

All of this lands before a ball has even been kicked in the league. Villa must regroup quickly before heading to Brighton, where Emery will be forced to lean hard on his remaining senior core and whatever tactical flexibility he can squeeze from a depleted squad.

With key figures missing in both midfield and attack, the opening weeks of the campaign have turned into an immediate examination of Villa’s depth and resilience. Emery has built his reputation on structure, adaptability, and solutions under pressure.

He will need every bit of that now.
