Logan Dobbs: Gillingham's Surprise Package in League Two
Gareth Ainsworth says he has been taken aback by the impact of teenage defender Logan Dobbs, branding the youngster a “surprise package” in Gillingham’s season.
Dobbs, just 19, has quietly become a fixture in the side. He has started every game so far and stepped into the spotlight on Saturday, climbing highest to nod in his first senior goal as the Gills beat Tranmere 2-0.
That header did more than break the deadlock. It underlined how quickly Dobbs has gone from squad option to one of Ainsworth’s most trusted performers.
Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, Ainsworth laid out the story. The plan in August did not revolve around Dobbs. Then the first game brought an injury to Liam Gordon. Sam Gale left for Barnsley. Within a week, the pecking order had been ripped up and a gap appeared.
“All of a sudden the door opened,” Ainsworth said, “and Logan’s been sensational.”
The Gillingham boss admitted even he has been surprised by the level of Dobbs’ performances.
“I think he will understand when I say I didn’t know he was capable of – he’s done really well to become one of the consistent members of the squad here,” Ainsworth said, underlining how quickly the teenager has earned his place.
The fans have noticed too. As Dobbs wheeled away to celebrate his header against Tranmere, the Rainham End roared out songs declaring he is “one of our own”. For a local youngster, a first goal at home, in front of those voices, carried a different weight.
“When he got his first goal in front of the fans then that’s what dreams are made of,” Ainsworth said.
Gillingham sit 11th in League Two and the tests keep coming. Next up is a visit from second-placed Bristol Rovers on Saturday. Dobbs has forced his way into the team on the back of injuries and departures; now comes the real question — how far can he drive this Gills side in the thick of a promotion race?
