Lionel Messi walked back onto a football pitch with grief still fresh and retirement suddenly real, but even his presence couldn’t keep Inter Miami alive in the Leagues Cup.

The Argentine star returned to action just days after the death of his father and long-time agent, Jorge, as Miami fell 3-2 to Mexico’s Leon and crashed out in the group stage.

A brutal week, a roaring ovation

Messi flew back into Florida late Tuesday after attending Sunday’s funeral in Argentina. By Wednesday night, he was stepping out of the DRV PNK Stadium tunnel to a thunderous ovation, summoned from the bench at half-time with Miami’s season in this competition hanging by a thread.

The emotional weight was obvious. Earlier that morning, Messi had posted a raw tribute to his father on social media, laying bare doubts rarely voiced by a player of his stature.

“I don’t know what I’ll do without you, I don’t know how to go on,” he wrote.

“I just played football, and now I have serious doubts about continuing to do so for much longer.”

Those words hung over the night. Every touch felt heavier, every run framed by the knowledge that the greatest player of his era is openly questioning how much longer he wants to keep doing this.

Miami strike first, Leon hit harder

For a while, the script seemed to bend in Miami’s favour. The hosts went 1-0 up, clinging to the hope that their captain’s return might drag them through a must-win final group match.

Then Daniel Arcila took over.

The Colombian forward struck twice, turning the game on its head and powering Leon to a comeback win that booked them as the first side into the quarterfinals of this year’s tournament between MLS and Liga MX clubs. Miami, champions in 2023 and finalists again in 2025, were out in the opening phase for the first time since the competition expanded.

The pressure finally told, and Miami’s defensive frailties resurfaced at the worst possible moment.

Playing through pain

Messi had made himself available to coach Guillermo Hoyos despite missing Saturday’s defeat to Monterrey while he was in Argentina with his family. His decision to play, so soon after burying his father, hit his teammates hard.

Yannick Bright, on the scoresheet for Miami, admitted he was stunned to see Messi in the dressing room.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Bright said. “It shows how much he cares. When I saw he was here, all I was thinking about was to give my 150 percent for him.

“It’s a tough situation. We try to stay close to him and support him as much as we can, but it’s a lot.”

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who joined Miami after the World Cup, called Messi “an example for all of us” for insisting on playing through such an intensely personal loss.

On the opposite bench, Leon coach Javier Gandolfi could only echo that respect.

“Today he demonstrated once more what he’s made of,” Gandolfi said. “He is a human being that is different to the rest.”

A fallen champion

This exit stings for a club that had made the Leagues Cup its stage.

In 2023, Miami lifted the trophy with Messi newly arrived and flanked by former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, a fairytale run that announced the club as a force in the region. Two years later, they were back in the final, only to be dismantled 3-0 by the Seattle Sounders in a bad-tempered showpiece that ended with a post-whistle brawl and a suspension for Luis Suarez, ruling him out of this year’s edition.

Now, the same tournament has sent them home early.
