Lionel Messi Scores Emotional Goal Against Philadelphia Union
Lionel Messi’s right boot met the ball and, for a brief second, everything else fell away.
On Wednesday night against the Philadelphia Union, in the 26th minute, the 39-year-old stepped into a moment heavy with more than just scoreboard pressure. Ian Fray nudged a simple pass to his right, and Messi picked it up just outside the heart of the box. A touch to steady himself, a glide toward the center, then that familiar left-footed strike whipped low into the far corner.
Inter Miami CF 2, Philadelphia Union 1. But this goal carried a different weight.
Messi skipped, punched the air, then turned toward his teammates. Telasco Segovia met him first with a high-five. Within seconds, pink shirts closed in, wrapping him in a tight huddle. It looked less like a routine celebration and more like a team closing ranks around its star.
This was his first goal since the passing of his father, Jorge, on Aug. 8 at the age of 68. Father, agent, ever-present figure in his career – gone just 11 days earlier.
A night charged with emotion
Inter Miami had already set the tone before kickoff. The club held a moment of silence to honor Jorge, the stadium pausing to acknowledge the man behind so much of Messi’s journey. In the 10th minute, matching his iconic jersey number, a chant rolled around the ground, a vocal show of solidarity with the Argentinian superstar.
On the pitch, Messi had already left his mark before his goal. Earlier in the match, he slid a pass into the path of Dániel Pintér, who finished for Inter Miami’s opener – Pintér’s first MLS goal. A debut strike, created by the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, on a night that felt anything but ordinary.
The game itself refused to settle into a neat script. Inter Miami’s lead didn’t hold; Philadelphia clawed their way back, and the contest finished 2-2. The points were shared, the emotions were not.
From absence to impact
Messi had missed the Aug. 8 Leagues Cup match as he mourned his father’s death, stepping away from the team on a night when football had to wait. He returned to the squad on Aug. 12 against León, coming off the bench in the second half, easing his way back into competitive action.
He had already restarted his scoring rhythm earlier in the month. His first two goals after the World Cup came in Inter Miami’s 4-2 Leagues Cup win over Atlético de San Luis on Aug. 5, a reminder that even in the twilight of his career, he still bends matches to his will.
But this latest strike, against Philadelphia, was different. Same left foot. Same ruthless precision. A completely different backdrop.
The season will move on. Fixtures will pile up. More goals will come. Yet for Messi, and for those watching, this one will sit apart – the night the greatest of his era scored again, carrying his father’s memory with him into the net.
