Juventus Defender Gatti Injured by Fan in Pre-Season Friendly

Federico Gatti’s start to the new season may have been wrecked not by a mistimed tackle or a heavy challenge, but by one of his own supporters.

The Juventus defender suffered an ankle injury in a friendly against the club’s reserve side after a fan who had invaded the pitch lost his footing and crashed into him, in a scene as surreal as it was costly.

Celebration Turns Into Chaos

Half-time had just been signalled. Instead of heading straight for the dressing room, Gatti stayed out on the pitch, applauding the stands and acknowledging the crowd.

Behind him, several fans suddenly broke from the stands and sprinted onto the grass. Gatti, focused on the supporters in front of him, never saw them coming.

The first fan to hit the turf tried to slow down. He couldn’t. He slipped, skidded across the surface and slammed straight into the Italian centre-back, sending him sprawling.

Gatti went down and stayed down. What should have been a light-hearted moment between players and fans ended with the defender on the ground, clutching his ankle, before limping away instead of joining in the festivities.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the impact left him with an ankle problem serious enough to place his availability for the Serie A opener in real doubt.

Doubt For Serie A Opener

The fallout was immediate. Gatti did not train with Juventus on Tuesday, and his presence against Frosinone in the first league match now looks highly unlikely.

For the coaching staff, it is a headache they could hardly have anticipated. Gatti had completed a normal pre-season, building rhythm and fitness, only to be sidelined by an incident that had nothing to do with the actual contest.

An avoidable setback. And one that could force a reshuffle at the back just as the competitive action begins.

Tradition Under Scrutiny

Inside the club, the questions have already started.

The annual friendly between Juventus and their reserve side is usually a celebration: a relaxed, family-style occasion where fans can get close to their heroes and welcome in the new campaign. That intimacy, though, has long carried a risk. Pitch invasions have happened before and have caused problems more than once.

This time, the cost is brutally clear. With a first-team defender now injured after a fan’s slip, Juventus may be pushed into a rethink.

The format of the traditional match, and the freedom given to supporters around it, is suddenly under serious review as the club looks to ensure that a pre-season party never again ends with a key player limping away from his own fans.
