Linton Maina Injury Scare Shakes FC Köln Before Bundesliga Start
FC Köln’s final week of preparation for the new Bundesliga season has been rocked by an injury scare to in-form winger Linton Maina, who left training in tears on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Harambee Stars prospect went down after a challenge at the Geißbockheim training ground, appearing to take a knock to his foot or ankle. He tried to shake it off and continue, but the pain quickly won that battle.
Maina eventually sank to the turf and stayed there, visibly distressed, before medical staff came on to treat him. Training carried on around him; the mood changed instantly.
Coach René Wagner did not hide his concern. He followed the limping winger as Maina made his way slowly towards the dressing room for further assessment, just four days before Köln open their league campaign at home to Hoffenheim.
From match-winner to major doubt
The timing could hardly be worse for club or player.
Only 24 hours earlier, Maina had underlined his growing importance to Wagner’s side in the DFB-Pokal. Coming off the bench against Würzburg, he delivered the assist for Isak Johannesson’s winning goal in a 2-1 victory, another decisive contribution in a strong pre-season.
That performance had strengthened his case for a starting role on Saturday. His pace and direct running on the flank have been a recurring theme of Köln’s summer, and his understanding with the forwards has sharpened with every outing.
Now, that momentum hangs in the balance.
Reports around the club suggest Wagner is hopeful the damage is limited to a shin problem, the kind of issue that might still clear up in time for the weekend. Until the medical team completes its checks, though, there is real anxiety over how serious the injury might be.
A thin attack under more strain
For Köln, losing Maina for any length of time would be more than a simple selection headache.
The club is already trying to reorganise its attack after the €20 million sale of Jakub Kaminski to Benfica, a departure that stripped significant quality from the right wing. Depth in that area was a concern even before Tuesday’s training session.
Maina’s surge in form had eased some of those worries. He looked ready to step into a bigger role, carrying the spark that Kaminski once provided and offering Wagner a dynamic option out wide.
Take him out of the equation now, and the attacking plan suddenly looks fragile again.
Köln’s medical update in the coming days will shape more than just one team sheet. It could define how boldly Wagner’s side can start a season that already feels delicate, and whether Maina’s breakout campaign is merely delayed or derailed before a ball is even kicked.
