Deportivo Cali midfielder Johan Martínez has survived a violent armed attack in Cali, after being ambushed and threatened at gunpoint while travelling through the city with his family, according to reports in Marca.

The incident, which unfolded away from the stadium lights and television cameras, has shaken one of Colombia’s most traditional clubs and reopened a raw debate about the safety of footballers in the country.

Gunpoint threat in front of his family

Martínez was intercepted in the city by individuals described as alleged club supporters. The confrontation escalated quickly. A firearm was produced. Threats were made. He was assaulted.

Speaking to Super Combo del Deporte, Deportivo Cali’s legal director Felipe Restrepo did not soften the details.

“They intimidated him with a firearm, they assaulted him; this cannot happen, people who do this are not fans,” he said, drawing a clear line between legitimate supporters and those hiding behind club colours to commit crimes.

The attack took place while Martínez was in the company of his loved ones, turning what should have been a routine journey into a terrifying ordeal.

Club issues fierce condemnation

Deportivo Cali moved fast. Senior officials from the Azucarero institution reacted within hours, offering full institutional backing to Martínez and his family and issuing a strong public statement against the assault and the wider climate of aggression.

“Club Profesional Deportivo Cali S.A. categorically rejects the acts of violence and intimidation to which our player was subjected yesterday,” the club declared.

“Our institution expresses its full support and solidarity with Johan and his family. No form of aggression, threat, or intimidation has a place in football or in our society.”

The wording left no room for ambiguity. This was not treated as an isolated scare, but as part of a “rising tide of violence” that has seeped into Colombian sport and, increasingly, into the daily lives of players.

Psychological scars and a swift return

Physically, Martínez escaped serious injury. Mentally, the damage is more complex.

Cali officials confirmed the player has been given intensive psychological counselling to help him process the trauma of being held at gunpoint with his family at his side. The club has thrown its medical and support staff behind him in an attempt to stabilise his immediate environment.
