JJ Gabriel Steps Away from Manchester United Youth Team

JJ Gabriel will be nowhere near Leigh Sports Village on Friday night. Manchester United’s rising 15-year-old forward, who has lit up Premier League 2 so far this season, will not feature against Brentford – and his absence runs far deeper than simple rotation.

The teenager has scored in both of United’s league fixtures at that level. On 24 August, in his debut, he announced himself with a moment of audacity: spotting the Ipswich goalkeeper off his line, he lifted the ball over him from 20 yards. Seven days later, against Leicester, he did it again in a different way – sharp turn in the box, defender beaten, composed finish in a 4-1 win.

Those two flashes of talent did more than win a couple of age-group games. They sparked talk. Inside the club, they fed a growing belief that Gabriel might be fast-tracked into United’s first Champions League squad of the season, for the opener against Azerbaijan champions Sabah. Michael Carrick was in the stands for his first Premier League 2 outing; senior coaching staff watched the second. The pathway looked clear.

Then it shut.

When United submitted their A list for the Champions League, Gabriel’s name was not on it. For a player under 16, that was the only route into the competition. United went on to beat Sabah 4-0, with Carrick making all five substitutions by the 72nd minute. Gabriel never had a chance to be involved.

That decision is understood to be one of the key flashpoints behind what has followed, though there were already issues simmering in the background. The result is stark: Gabriel is no longer training with the club.

Inside Old Trafford, there remains a belief that the situation can still be repaired. People close to Gabriel see it very differently. Their expectation is blunt – they do not think he will play for Manchester United again.

For now, his exact whereabouts are unclear. What does seem likely is that his name will not appear on any of England’s age-group squad lists when they are announced on Friday.

A few weeks ago, Gabriel was United’s next big story in youth football. Now the question is whether his story with the club is already over.
