Jamal Musiala's Neurological Condition and Bayern Munich's Unity
Jamal Musiala’s fight with a neurological condition has become a quiet test of Bayern Munich’s unity – and, according to Lothar Matthäus, the club has passed it with distinction.
The Germany international twice collapsed on the pitch during pre-season friendlies against RB Leipzig and 1. FC Heidenheim, forced off on both occasions. He later explained he had been dealing with “absences”, a neurological dysfunction, and has not played for Bayern since.
Bayern then confirmed they had been aware of the illness for some time, with the episodes linked to a change in medication rather than a new diagnosis. What followed behind the scenes has clearly impressed one of the club’s greatest icons.
Matthäus hails Bayern’s silence and solidarity
On Sky90, Matthäus did not reach first for tactics or transfers when asked about his biggest impression at Bayern in recent times. He went straight to Musiala.
“The very biggest thing I have experienced at Bayern Munich was the name Jamal Musiala,” he said, before lifting the curtain slightly on what has been happening inside Säbener Straße.
“People at the club have known for six, seven, eight months. But it is not only the president and the doctor who know. The whole team know. And nothing has come out. That shows the togetherness. Not only on the pitch, but off it as well.”
In an era when almost everything leaks, the silence around Musiala’s condition stands out. No whispers. No speculation. Just a closed circle around a 21-year-old dealing with a deeply personal issue.
Matthäus did not hide his admiration.
“Huge respect for dealing with such a topic so properly and in such a united way. All I can say is: chapeau to Bayern Munich,” he said.
Musiala back in training, but future steps cautious
Musiala is now back in training with Bayern, working under new coach Vincent Kompany as he edges towards a return. The next question is obvious: will he be in the squad for Wednesday’s cup tie away to VfL Osnabrück?
For now, there is no guarantee. Kompany and the medical staff are expected to tread carefully after a year that has already taken a toll on the playmaker’s body and rhythm.
Last season, Musiala missed long stretches with a fibula fracture. He only returned in January and needed time to rediscover sharpness and confidence. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann still took him to the World Cup this summer, but like many of his national team colleagues, Musiala struggled to leave a lasting mark on the tournament.
Now the story shifts again. The talent is unchanged. The expectations remain enormous. The difference is that everyone around him knows exactly what he has been carrying – and, as Bayern’s handling of the past months shows, they seem determined to carry some of that weight with him.
