IUP Crimson Hawks Hold Clarion to 2-2 Draw Despite Dominance

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP threw everything at Clarion. The scoreboard never quite followed.

Despite dominating the shot count and the territory, the Crimson Hawks had to settle for a 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon at South Campus Field, rescued by a ruthless brace from forward Kat Morgan.

Morgan sets the tone, Clarion hits back

IUP started on the front foot and stayed there. The breakthrough came early, and it came from their sharpest weapon.

In the ninth minute, Morgan slipped free and made it count, finishing off a neat setup from Melody Leiva to hand the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 lead and confirm their bright start.

That control didn’t rattle Clarion. The response was swift. Just six minutes later, in the 15th, Leah Deal struck to level the match, punishing one of the Golden Eagles’ rare forays forward.

The visitors then flipped the script completely. In the 30th minute, Sofia Barba put Clarion in front, turning IUP’s early dominance into a 2-1 deficit as the Crimson Hawks walked off at halftime trailing despite bossing the ball.

One-way traffic after the break

The second half turned into a siege.

IUP pinned Clarion back and never really let them out. The numbers tell the story: 8-0 in shots after the break, 14-3 overall, and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks for the match. Every Clarion attack from open play dried up. Every loose ball seemed to land at a Crimson Hawks foot.

The Golden Eagles hung on, anchored by goalkeeper Sage Sherk, who finished with seven saves under constant pressure. IUP kept coming. Crosses, cutbacks, shots from distance. Clarion’s back line bent but, for a long stretch, refused to break.

Then the pressure finally told.

In the 74th minute, Morgan struck again, burying her second of the afternoon to drag IUP level at 2-2. It was a clinical performance from the forward: two goals from four shots, every one of them on target.

Chances created, points shared

Leiva, who assisted the opener, remained heavily involved, finishing with three shots of her own. Ayla Cook and Charlotte De Keukelaere each registered two attempts as IUP kept Clarion hemmed in. Zoe Ans-Bitchoka and Avery Clanton also tested Sherk, forcing the Golden Eagles’ keeper into more work as the clock wound down.

At the other end, junior goalkeeper Sarah Gatz played all 90 minutes for IUP. Clarion managed just three shots all game, but made the most of their looks, scoring with both efforts that found the target.

The final whistle brought frustration as much as relief for the hosts. IUP had the ball, the chances, and the momentum. Clarion had the efficiency.

The result moves the Crimson Hawks to 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-2 in PSAC play. Clarion leaves at 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference, having survived a long afternoon under fire.

For IUP, the question now is simple: if they keep creating like this, how long can the goals – and the wins – really stay away?
