Iraola Provides Updates on Barcola and Gakpo After Anfield Performance

Bradley Barcola’s first start in a Liverpool shirt lit up Anfield – and then briefly silenced it.

The France forward, handed his full Reds debut in the Champions League clash, buzzed around the Atletico defence, stretched the game and carved out two clear one-on-one chances before his night ended on the hour mark. As he sank to the turf and the board went up, the initial worry was obvious.

The diagnosis was not.

By the time Andoni Iraola sat down for his post-match press conference, the tension had gone.

No, it is cramp. It is just cramp, there is no injury.

the head coach said, cutting through any talk of a setback.

Building up Barcola

For Iraola, this was always going to be a step into the unknown. Barcola arrived without a pre-season at PSG, and Liverpool had been feeling their way with his minutes.

“With Bradley, it's about building his physical condition,” Iraola explained. “We don't really know – or we didn't know until now, probably – how much he can play because he hasn't had any minutes in pre-season for PSG.

“He played 30 the other day and today we had some question marks, how many minutes he can give us and probably now we know.”

The answer was an hour of high-intensity running and constant threat. The finish was missing, the movement was not.

“I’m very happy because also he has had two very clear chances against the ’keeper. He hasn't scored, but I want him there,” Iraola said. “There is where he has to make the difference, arriving to those spots, those positions, and I'm very happy because in – I don't know how many minutes he's played – two times against the ’keeper is a good sign with Bradley.”

The message was clear: keep arriving, the goals will follow.

Gakpo a doubt for Fulham

While Barcola’s issue looks minor, Cody Gakpo remains a concern ahead of Saturday’s league clash with Fulham, again at Anfield.

The Dutch forward missed Tuesday’s training session and sat out the league-phase opener, and Iraola admitted he cannot yet promise Gakpo will be involved at the weekend.

I don't know if he will be back for Fulham. I hope so, but I don't know.

he said. “He doesn't have a proper injury, but he finished with niggles in both of the adductors the other day.

“We expected to have him for today, but it hasn't been possible. It's not a big thing, but the problem is we play here again in two days and a half.”

The schedule leaves little room for caution. Recovery becomes the only plan.

“I think now is a moment of recovery in these two days,” Iraola continued. “Let's see how Bradley has finished, how Cody is and if he can give us some minutes. If not, Rio, Victor, I think today everyone has done a big effort.

“We need to recover, we need to regroup and think because in two days and a half we play again here against Fulham, it's a very important game again for us. So, I hope we can have Cody with us, but I cannot guarantee it.”

Kerkez joins the cramp list

Milos Kerkez also failed to see out the win over Atletico, replaced by Kostas Tsimikas on 88 minutes after receiving treatment. Another potential headache? Not this time.

Just like Barcola, Kerkez was simply spent.

“Milos and Bradley were just cramping and were just tired,” Iraola said. “I think I always want to do subs because of this, because you've given everything, you don't have any more, perfect.

“We do the subs, not because you haven't run and I have to sub you. So, I prefer when you've done everything you can and then we sub you because you cannot run anymore.”

The message to his players was as blunt as it was encouraging: empty the tank and you’ll be looked after.

Now comes the real test. Two and a half days, a bruising European night in the legs, fitness questions over Gakpo and a new forward still being built up. Fulham will walk into Anfield fresh; Liverpool will arrive with cramp stories and tired bodies.

Whether this high-intensity approach can be sustained across a long season starts to get its first real answer on Saturday.
