Ipswich Town's Resilience Against Liverpool: Diop's Insights

Issa Diop insists Ipswich Town’s spirit did not crack, even as Liverpool landed two heavy blows inside the opening 10 minutes at Portman Road.

Jurgen Klopp’s side struck twice early in Friday’s 2-0 win, leaving Ipswich staring at a long night against one of the Premier League’s most ruthless outfits. Many teams would have folded. Diop says Ipswich refused to.

“It’s even harder when it’s again Liverpool and a top side like that,” the defender told BBC Radio Suffolk, reflecting on a bruising start that might have turned into a rout.

Instead, Ipswich steadied themselves. The home side worked their way back into the contest, tightened up at the back and began to carve out chances of their own, forcing Liverpool to respect the fightback rather than coast through the evening.

“The good thing is the response after conceding the second goal was good,” Diop said. “We stuck together, we reacted well. We could have done better in different ways. You can always do better when you concede goals.”

That theme — resilience with a demand for higher standards — ran through Diop’s assessment. He acknowledged the damage done in those chaotic opening exchanges but framed the rest of the night as proof that Ipswich are built on more than just early-season enthusiasm.

For Diop, the defeat becomes part of the work, not a scar to dwell on.

“We can work on it this week and we will be ready to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday,” he added, already turning his attention to the next challenge.

Ipswich will head to south London still smarting from Liverpool’s early burst, but Diop believes the foundations are sound.

“We have a good group with good coaching staff,” he said. “So I’m very happy here.”

Liverpool took the points. Ipswich, Diop insists, kept something just as important: their belief, and a clear idea of what must improve before Palace provide the next examination.
