Idaho Edges Grand Canyon 1-0 in Defensive Clash

MOSCOW, Idaho – One bad touch, one ruthless finish, and Grand Canyon’s trip to the Kibbie Dome never really recovered.

Idaho edged the Lopes 1-0 on Friday night, a match between two usually free-scoring sides reduced to a single decisive moment in the sixth minute.

Early gift, early punishment

The game’s only goal came from a mistake Grand Canyon will replay in its minds all weekend. Goalkeeper Emma Knack tried to clear, mis-hit it, and watched in horror as the ball rolled straight to Idaho senior forward Calli Chiarelli.

It was the kind of chance forwards imagine the night before a match. Chiarelli took a couple of steadying touches, saw an almost unguarded net, and drilled her shot home for a 1-0 lead that would never be erased.

From there, Idaho had something to protect. Grand Canyon had a mountain to climb on turf that never truly suited them.

Lopes shut out, attack silenced

Under head coach Derek Cissell, Grand Canyon has built a reputation for finding goals in different ways and on big stages, including the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance at No. 3 USC.

This was the exception.

The Lopes failed to record a single shot on target – only the second time in the Cissell era that’s happened. Idaho’s back line closed space quickly, cut off passing lanes, and never allowed GCU’s attackers to find any rhythm in the final third.

Every half-chance died on a last touch, a heavy pass, or a white-shirted defender stepping in.

Defense steadies, but margin stays razor-thin

After the early error, GCU’s defense settled. The back line tightened up, and Knack responded well, turning away the remaining danger.

Idaho managed only three more shots on frame the rest of the night, all handled by Knack as the Lopes kept the deficit at one and gave themselves a chance to steal something late. The equalizer never came.

On the other end, Idaho’s veteran goalkeeper Paula Flores quietly stacked another milestone. She secured her 22nd career shutout, rarely troubled as the Vandals protected their narrow lead with discipline and composure.

Idaho streaks on, GCU looks for answers

Idaho, now 5-1-1, extended its winning run to three matches and finally broke through against Grand Canyon after last season’s loss in Phoenix. The Vandals’ form in September is starting to look serious.

Grand Canyon, now 3-2-2, saw a three-match unbeaten streak snapped. The loss doesn’t derail the season, but it does sting – especially with so little created in front of goal.

The response has to come quickly.

On Sunday, the Lopes leave the turf behind and return to a grass surface against Eastern Washington in Cheney. The Eagles just had their own hot start checked by a defeat to Wyoming that ended a five-match winning streak to open the year, and they’ll be rested and dangerous.

GCU’s task is clear: rediscover their attacking edge, grab a result on the road, and roll into a looming three-match homestand – and the start of conference play – with momentum, not questions.
