Hugo Ekitike's Rehabilitation Journey at Liverpool

Hugo Ekitike has offered a fresh glimpse into his rehabilitation as Liverpool continue to wait on the return of their big-money striker.

The 24-year-old has been out since April after rupturing his Achilles tendon, a brutal end to a debut season at Anfield that had promised so much. Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt 12 months ago in a deal worth up to £79million, Ekitike hit 17 goals before his campaign was cut short.

Now the road back is well under way.

Clairefontaine grind for Liverpool’s No 9

Ekitike has been working at the famed Centre Medical de Clairefontaine, the high-performance base used by France’s men’s and women’s national teams. The facility shared several photos of the forward putting in the hard yards as he builds strength and mobility after surgery.

The post, which Ekitike liked and reshared on his Instagram story, read:

"At Clairefontaine, there is the Chateau for national team call-ups... and the Medical Centre for their rehabilitation. Thank you to our Bleus* and Bleues for their trust."

For Liverpool, those images are a welcome sight. The club know the process will be long, but seeing their striker back on the grass and working with elite medical staff is an encouraging step.

Iraola’s blunt injury reality

Andoni Iraola has been careful not to fuel expectations over a quick comeback. During pre-season, the Liverpool head coach made it clear that Ekitike still has a significant spell on the sidelines ahead of him.

"In terms of order, I think the closest one to returning is [Giovanni] Leoni," Iraola said in July. "After will be Conor [Bradley] and Hugo [Ekitike], but especially the last two are still way off. We are talking about months and still a lot of time out."

The message was stark: Liverpool must plan without Ekitike for the foreseeable future.

Not the only long-term absentee

Ekitike is one of three major long-term injury cases Liverpool are juggling.

Giovanni Leoni has been out since suffering an ACL injury on his debut last September, a cruel blow that halted his Liverpool career almost before it began. Conor Bradley is also sidelined after sustaining a knee injury in January.

All three are in different phases of recovery, but share the same distant target: a clean bill of health and a return to the intensity of Premier League football.

For Ekitike, the pictures from Clairefontaine show the grind has truly begun. The question now is not whether he returns, but how sharp and how decisive he will be when he finally pulls on the Liverpool shirt again.
