Hartlepool United Faces Injury Setback: Merrick and Kouogun Out

Hartlepool United have been dealt a brutal double injury setback, with goalkeeper Max Merrick ruled out for six weeks and defender Max Kouogun facing the prospect of ankle surgery.

Manager Kevin Clark confirmed the blows after a week that started with a clean sheet and ended with a medical bulletin that could reshape his early-season plans.

Merrick back at Chelsea and out for six weeks

Merrick, on loan from Chelsea, lasted just over half an hour of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking before pulling up with a thigh problem and being forced off.

He has since returned to his parent club for treatment.

“Max obviously went straight back down to Chelsea with it being his parent club and the medical facilities they have there,” Clark told BBC Radio Tees. “He's had a scan.

“We spoke with their medical team - not good news, but probably what we expected. He's got a thigh tear, so he'll be out for six weeks.”

Chelsea’s resources now take centre stage in Merrick’s recovery. Clark knows exactly what that means for the 20-year-old.

“You can imagine what a top elite European club has in terms of facilities and the attention that they can have in terms of the amount of medical staff that they have as well.

“He'll get the very best of attention there and then when he gets close to that return, he'll come back up with us. We're keeping in touch with him every day, making sure that everything's okay.”

In the short term, though, Hartlepool must cope without him.

Merrick’s injury opened the door for summer signing Nathan Fisher against Woking, and the 21-year-old is now in line to start at Kidderminster Harriers on Friday night (19:45 BST). Player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith is set to step up as the back-up option.

Kouogun facing months out

If Merrick’s absence stings, the news on Kouogun cuts even deeper.

The defender damaged his ankle ligaments after landing awkwardly in the defeat to Eastleigh in August. A scan has now confirmed the extent of the problem.

“Following on from that, we've had a scan on Max Kouogun with his ankle issue when he landed in the Eastleigh game, he's got some kind of ligament damage, so Max will be out for a minimum of two months,” Clark said.

The club will now consult a specialist to determine whether surgery is required. If it is, the timescale stretches again.

“We're going to see a consultant to see whether it needs surgery, if that would be the case, that would take up to three months. So that's a big blow for us because Max is a big player for us in every sense of the word.”

Two key figures, both sidelined. One for weeks, one possibly for months.

Recruitment questions on the table

The reshuffle has already started in goal, but Clark is not ruling out further movement.

He will hold talks with Chris Maxwell, head of football operations at club advisors Bromby & Partners, to explore the possibility of bringing in another goalkeeper to cover Merrick’s absence.

For now, Fisher has the gloves, Smith steps into the No. 2 role, and Hartlepool head to Kidderminster knowing the season’s first real test of depth has arrived early.
