Harry Maguire suffered a gruesome facial injury just seconds into Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Everton, but the defender refused to leave the pitch.

The 33-year-old kept his place in Michael Carrick’s starting XI after a standout display in last week’s 5-2 win over Ipswich, where he was at the heart of Jacob Greaves’ controversial own goal. This time, though, the drama arrived almost immediately – and at his expense.

Barely a minute had gone at Hill Dickinson Stadium when, according to The Sun, Maguire clashed heads with Everton striker Thierno Barry while contesting an aerial ball. Maguire lost the duel and crashed to the turf, and the impact was instantly worrying.

Blood streamed from the centre-back’s nose as he lay on the ground, prompting paramedics to sprint onto the pitch. Team-mates rushed around him, casting anxious looks towards the bench, half-expecting Carrick to be forced into a very early change.

United’s medical staff worked quickly, plugging his nose and stemming the flow of blood as the crowd watched on. It was a nasty collision and a brutal start to the afternoon.

Maguire got back to his feet. Shaken, patched up, but unflinching.
