Haaland Fit for Community Shield Clash Against Arsenal

Erling Haaland has been passed fit for Manchester City’s Community Shield showdown with Arsenal – but that doesn’t guarantee he starts.

The Norwegian, who punished Arsenal with two goals in three meetings last season, briefly alarmed City supporters when he sat out the closing stages of Thursday’s open training session. Any fears were quickly cooled by Enzo Maresca.

“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the City head coach said on Friday, drawing a line under the issue and confirming his main striker is available in Cardiff.

Haaland fit, but not battle-hardened

Match-fit is another question. Haaland did not play a single minute in pre-season, granted an extended break after helping Norway reach the World Cup quarter-finals. His legs are rested, but his rhythm is untested.

That opens the door for Omar Marmoush to keep his place. The forward has seized his chance this summer and comes into the curtain-raiser in sharp form after scoring twice in the 3-1 friendly victory over Atletico Madrid. On current evidence, he has the momentum to lead the line from the start, with Haaland primed as a devastating option off the bench.

Midfield reshuffle as Reijnders departs

Behind them, Maresca has a puzzle to solve. Tijjani Reijnders’ move to Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League is expected to be wrapped up before kick-off, leaving Manchester City without a key midfield option and forcing a rethink alongside Mateo Kovacic.

Rico Lewis is one solution. The academy product started in midfield during the win over K-League Allstars and offers energy, press resistance and tactical discipline in tight spaces.

Then comes the big-money wildcard. Elliot Anderson, the £116million summer signing, is also in contention to make his Manchester City debut. The England international has only just rejoined full training, though, as have Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki. With that in mind, Nico Gonzalez may be the safer, more settled choice to partner Kovacic from the off.

Rodri is back around the squad after minor back surgery, but remains in the rehabilitation phase. All signs point to this Arsenal clash arriving too early for the midfield anchor to be risked.

Defensive battle for starting spots

At the back, one of City’s standout pre-season performers is pushing hard for a starting shirt. Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed Maresca with his sharpness and attacking thrust on the left. If he gets the nod at left-back, Josko Gvardiol is likely to slide inside and join Ruben Dias at the centre of defence, giving City a blend of aggression, recovery pace and ball-playing quality.

So Haaland is fit, Marmoush is firing, the midfield is in flux and the back line is evolving. For Maresca, this Community Shield isn’t just a trophy on offer in Cardiff – it’s the first real test of how his new City will look when the season’s real battles begin.
