Great Danes Rally to Draw with Stony Brook 2-2

ALBANY, N.Y. – Two goals down, ten minutes left, and UAlbany refused to fold.

The Great Danes clawed back from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 with Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, salvaging a point from a game they dominated for long stretches but nearly let slip away.

UAlbany moves to 2-4-1, while Stony Brook, out of the CAA, stays unbeaten at 3-0-4.

UAlbany on the Front Foot, but No Breakthrough

From the opening whistle, UAlbany set the tone.

In the 5th minute, Sydney Kofton signaled her intent, uncorking the Great Danes’ first effort of the day. It would be the first of many. Kofton tormented the Seawolves’ back line throughout, finishing with a staggering 11 shots, eight of them headers and five on target.

Stony Brook, though, held firm.

Goalkeeper Claudia Volino was first called into action in the 24th minute, turning away a UAlbany effort to keep the game scoreless. A minute later, the visitors nearly snatched the lead against the run of play when a strike from Maya Corbett crashed off the post and stayed out.

That scare didn’t slow UAlbany’s tempo. The Great Danes peppered the Seawolves’ goal with six more shots before halftime, but the final touch kept deserting them. The teams went into the break locked at 0-0, the hosts frustrated but very much on top.

Seawolves Strike Twice After the Break

The pattern flipped after halftime.

In the 56th minute, Stony Brook finally punished UAlbany’s missed chances, breaking the deadlock to go up 1-0. The goal rattled the Great Danes, and the Seawolves sensed an opening.

The pressure from the visitors grew, and in the 71st minute Stony Brook doubled the lead, stretching it to 2-0 and silencing the home crowd. For all of UAlbany’s enterprise, the scoreboard told a brutal story.

Yet the game was far from over.

Blannett and Levac Lead the Comeback

With time slipping away, UAlbany needed a spark. Meredith Blannett lit the fuse.

In the 80th minute, Blannett finally broke through, slotting home her first goal of the year to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. It was no consolation strike. It changed the mood instantly.

The Great Danes surged forward. Every second ball, every loose pass, suddenly belonged to the home side.

Seven minutes later, the pressure broke Stony Brook’s resistance. Kiara Levac found the equalizer in the 87th minute, leveling the match at 2-2 and flipping the energy inside Casey Stadium. Levac finished the day with a goal and four shots, a constant threat in the attacking third.

UAlbany smelled a winner. The hosts forced one last chance in the dying seconds, earning a corner kick as the clock bled out. The delivery came in, bodies flew, but the decisive touch never arrived. The whistle followed, and the comeback stopped just short of all three points.

Numbers Tell the Story

The stat sheet underlined UAlbany’s attacking intent.

The Great Danes outshot Stony Brook 30-16, hammering 11 shots on target to the Seawolves’ four. Kofton led the barrage, with Blannett and Levac providing the crucial finishing touch when it mattered most.

The scoreboard may have read 2-2, but the performance carried the feel of a team starting to find its attacking edge.
