Goretzka sidelined as Villa faces early-season crisis

Leon Goretzka’s Aston Villa career has barely begun, and already it’s on pause.

The 31-year-old midfielder announced on Monday via Instagram that he has been forced to step away from action, confirming he will be unavailable until after the international fixtures spanning late September and early October.

“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after the time without matches,” Goretzka wrote. “It is frustrating, but I need this short break now so I can come back at full strength.”

The message carried a mix of irritation and gratitude. In the same post, the Germany international thanked Aston Villa’s supporters for the way they have embraced him since his summer arrival, saying he felt he was in the right place and comfortable at the club. Over the next few weeks, he intends to focus solely on recovering fully.

For Unai Emery, the timing is brutal.

Goretzka will miss at least four more games. Villa head to Bruges on Tuesday in the Champions League still hunting their first points of the campaign. Before the international break arrives, two Premier League fixtures and a League Cup tie also await, all now likely to go ahead without one of the side’s most experienced midfielders.

The context could hardly be worse. After eight years at Bayern Munich, the 73-cap international joined Aston Villa on a free transfer, billed as a cornerstone signing for a team looking to cement itself among Europe’s elite. Instead, he walks into a storm.

Villa have made a disastrous start to the new season. After three league matches, Emery’s team are still without a win and without a goal. The Birmingham club opened with back-to-back defeats, then scraped their first point of the campaign at the weekend against Nottingham Forest.

The squad has been stripped of some of its familiar spine. Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins — four key figures in Villa’s recent rise — all departed in the summer window, leaving gaps in attack, defence and midfield that have yet to be convincingly filled.

Now, with Goretzka temporarily out of the picture, those gaps feel even wider.

On 10 October, Villa are due back from the international pause with a home clash against Brentford FC. By then, the question will be stark: can Goretzka’s return and a reset in October jolt this season back to life, or is this slow start the sign of something far more troubling at Villa Park?
