Gibbs-White Replaces Injured Palmer in England Squad
Morgan Gibbs-White is set to be drafted back into the England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, with the Nottingham Forest midfielder expected to replace the injured Cole Palmer.
Palmer is poised to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad after picking up a minor issue, despite completing 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday. It is a brutal twist for a player who has spent the early weeks of the season reminding everyone why he felt so aggrieved to miss out on the last World Cup.
The 24-year-old has been central to Chelsea’s start, beginning six of their seven matches and producing four goals and two assists. After a summer on the outside looking in, he had finally been restored to the senior England set-up and handed a chance to reset his international story.
Tuchel made it clear before the injury that this recall came with demands attached. Palmer, he said, had “a point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.” The message was blunt: this was not a sentimental pick, it was an audition.
Instead, his comeback stalls again. Palmer has not played for England since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March, and that wait will now stretch on while he recovers. His fitness record only sharpens the frustration. A recurring groin problem dogged him through the 2025-26 campaign, prompting his then Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca – now in charge at Manchester City – to publicly question how the situation had been handled.
This latest setback reopens a door that had been almost shut.
Gibbs-White, 26, was one of the final names cut when Tuchel named his original squad, with the England manager admitting on Friday that the Forest playmaker had come “incredibly close” to making it. Now he is in.
He arrives in form. Gibbs-White has started the domestic season brightly, with one goal and two assists in five league games, knitting Forest’s attacks together and offering the kind of creative edge that Tuchel wants as England brace for a punishing run of fixtures.
His last taste of international football came in October 2025, a 3-0 friendly win over Wales, and he has been hovering on the fringes ever since. This call-up is more than a consolation prize for missing the initial squad list; it is a genuine opportunity to stake a long-term claim.
And the stage could hardly be bigger.
Upcoming Matches
England face four matches in a demanding extended international window. They open at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September, against World Cup holders Spain, a test of nerve and quality right out of the gate. Then comes a trip to the Czech Republic on 29 September, followed by another away assignment against Croatia on 3 October. The break ends back at Wembley, with a second meeting against the Czechs on 6 October.
Tuchel wanted depth. Circumstance has forced his hand. Now it is Gibbs-White who steps into the spotlight, while Palmer is left to confront a familiar question: how many more chances can his body afford to let slip?
