Gavi’s Journey: Pressure, Patience, and a Warning from His Knee
Hansi Flick has not promised Gavi anything. No guaranteed place, no automatic starts. What the Barcelona coach has given him is something different: trust. Real, visible trust. Gavi is not at the top of the pecking order every weekend, but Flick continues to see him as a key part of his plans, a player to build around rather than push aside.
The Andalusian is responding in the only way he knows. By working. By competing. By treating every training session like a trial in a squad packed with talent and ego, where every minute on the pitch has to be earned, not assumed.
Growing up under the spotlight
Speaking to "Men's Health", the 22-year-old opened up about how his world has changed since he first burst into the Barcelona first team as a teenager.
"Now there is much greater pressure than there was when I was 17 years old. At that time I did not realise where I was. The younger I was, the more I enjoyed football," he admitted.
That sentence cuts to the heart of his journey. Back then, the stage didn’t scare him because he barely saw it. Now he knows exactly where he is, what badge he wears, and how every touch is dissected. Enjoyment has had to coexist with expectation.
He has already lived through more setbacks than many players twice his age. Long injuries, lonely months in the gym, the fear that something might never quite be the same again. Those spells, he believes, forced him to grow.
"Perhaps I was not patient in the past, but now I am more patient," he said. "When I was injured, I had to complete the stages and set goals. It was also useful for me to learn other things beyond football. Now I can say that I take care of myself much better than I did when I started my professional career."
The reckless teenager who threw himself into every duel has had to learn a new skill: restraint. Not in his character, but in how he manages his body and his time.
The knee that changed everything
That lesson is written on his knee. The one that cost him almost an entire season. The one he now treats like a constant reminder.
"My knee must always be strong, whether I play or not," he explained. "I cannot be lax because the injury could happen at any moment."
There is no off switch for him now. No days where he can afford to ignore the exercises or skip the routines. The risk is too real, the memory too fresh.
Through that dark stretch, he did what many players do when the noise becomes too much: he closed ranks.
"I isolated myself with my family, and that helped me a lot," he said.
No grand speeches, no big gestures. Just a tight circle and a long road back.
Backing Lamine Yamal to be “among the best of all time”
Gavi is not only looking inward. He is also watching what is happening around him at Barcelona, and one name in particular has grabbed his attention: Lamine Yamal.
The teenager’s talent is obvious to anyone who has seen him play, but Gavi insists the real shock comes away from the cameras.
"This player is very skilful on the pitch, but he surprises you even more in training," he said. "I only hope he keeps developing. He is aware of his abilities. He can be among the best of all time."
That is not casual praise. It is a bold statement from someone who knows exactly how heavy those words are at a club like Barcelona.
"I see him as mentally strong, and that is the most important thing in the end," Gavi added. "He knows what he wants, and he still has a long football future ahead of him. He must continue in this way every day, because the present is the most important thing, and everyone will be watching him closely every day."
Gavi speaks like someone who has already lived the cycle: the early hype, the pressure, the injury, the comeback. Now he is trying to reclaim his own place in Flick’s plans while helping to shield a younger teammate from the same storms.
The minutes will be fought over. The competition will not ease. But Gavi has made one thing clear: he is not backing away from the challenge, and he expects Lamine Yamal to face it head-on too.
