FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle in 3-0 Victory

FC Groningen didn’t just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They brushed them aside. A sharp, confident 3-0 win at the Euroborg lifted Dick Lukkien’s team into sixth place, while a bruised PEC slid down to 16th and left with more questions than answers.

This was supposed to be Zwolle’s response to last weekend’s 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord. A reset. A reaction. Instead, Groningen seized control from the opening whistle and never really let go.

The hosts dictated the tempo early, snapping into duels and moving the ball with purpose. After 20 minutes, the pressure told.

Marco Rente split the defence with a clever pass into Jorg Schreuders, who showed real composure in the box. Rather than snatching at goal, he looked up and rolled the ball back to Thom van Bergen. One touch, calm finish, 1-0. Simple on the eye, ruthless in execution.

Zwolle, already fragile after last week, sagged. Groningen sensed it.

Not long after, Schreuders turned scorer. Ryan Thomas lost the ball in a dangerous area and Schreuders pounced, driving forward and letting fly from outside the box with his so-called weaker left foot. The strike was clean, the net bulged, and Groningen were cruising at 2-0.

PEC Zwolle offered almost nothing before the interval. Groningen’s back line stayed largely untroubled, their midfield snapping up second balls, the crowd enjoying a stress-free first half rarely seen in such a tight league table.

After the break, Zwolle finally stirred. For a brief spell, they pushed higher and found a bit of rhythm. Their first real chance summed up their night.

A low cross from the left skidded into the box, and Gabriël Reiziger darted across the near post to meet it. He got a touch, enough to make hearts skip for a moment, but the ball drifted just wide. Close, but not close enough to change the story.

Groningen absorbed that mini-surge and then shut the door.

On 68 minutes, they delivered the goal of the night. An indirect, well-rehearsed free-kick routine ended at the feet of Tygo Land, who didn’t hesitate. He thumped the ball into the top corner, a hammer of a finish that made it 3-0 and killed off any lingering doubt.

From there, it became a question of how many. Groningen kept playing with confidence, Zwolle clung on.

Van Bergen almost added a fourth and his second of the evening. A loose ball dropped kindly for him inside the penalty area, but this time his left-footed effort lacked the precision of his first-half finish and flew off target.

The miss barely mattered. The damage was long done.

Groningen walked off the pitch looking up the table, momentum in their stride. Zwolle, still reeling from that 0-7 and now this controlled 3-0 defeat, must somehow stop the slide before the season turns from worrying to desperate.
