European Giants Finalise Squads and Leave Stars Watching

The ink is dry on the European squad lists. The fallout is brutal.

Across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, managers have had to shut the door on some serious talent, squeezed by injury crises, registration rules and the simple fact that not everyone fits.

And some of the names left out will sting.

Liverpool’s Shock Calls

At Liverpool, Andoni Iraola has made two headline decisions.

Federico Chiesa, one of the club’s marquee attacking options, has been left out of the European squad. Not because of form, but because of numbers. The competition out wide is fierce after the summer arrivals of Daniel Munoz and Bradley Barcola, and Chiesa is the one to miss the cut.

The surprise doesn’t end there. Wataru Endo has also been omitted, with 21-year-old James McConnell preferred in midfield. It’s a clear statement: youth and energy over experience as Liverpool reshape their core for Europe.

Those left out will now be confined to domestic duty while the new guard tests itself on the continental stage.

Injuries Rip Through Champions League Plans

Across Europe, injury lists have been just as decisive as any manager’s whiteboard.

At Real Madrid, Ferland Mendy — a two-time Champions League winner — has been excluded while he recovers from a long-term problem. Marc Cucurella steps in at left-back, handed the European spotlight as Madrid look for stability on that flank without one of their most decorated defenders.

Borussia Dortmund have taken a similar hit. Captain Emre Can will not feature in the Champions League group stage as he continues his recovery from a crucial ligament injury suffered in March. A leader in the dressing room and on the pitch, his absence leaves a gap that cannot be filled by paperwork alone.

Barcelona’s gifted youngster Roony Bardghji and Dortmund midfielder Giannis Konstantelias also miss out after serious knee injuries. Both were on track to play meaningful roles; both now face the long, lonely road back while their teams move on without them.

Tactical Sacrifices and Harsh Regulations

Not every omission comes with a medical report attached. Some are pure football politics.

At Aston Villa, Unai Emery has had to swallow a call he described as extremely difficult: dropping £30m summer signing Taylor Harwood-Bellis from his European squad. A defender signed for big games and big nights will have to wait for them.

Seventeen-year-old Brian Madjo is another casualty at Villa, ruled out not by form or potential but by B-list eligibility rules. The regulations are unforgiving, and for young prospects, timing is everything.

In the Europa League, Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti has left out Khephren Thuram. Knee issues play a part, but so do settlement agreement restrictions imposed by UEFA, which tighten the margins and leave little room for compromise.

At Como, Cesc Fabregas has omitted Maxence Caqueret to meet competition guidelines. It’s the kind of decision that rarely makes headlines but shapes the depth and balance of a squad heading into a gruelling European schedule.

Transfer Drama Leaves Players in Limbo

The transfer window may be closed, but its chaos still echoes through these lists.

At Monaco, Folarin Balogun finds himself on the outside looking in. A deadline-day move to Everton collapsed at the last moment, and with it went his chance to feature in Europe this autumn. Instead of preparing for continental nights, he’ll be a spectator.

Bayer Leverkusen have also made a firm call on Victor Boniface, leaving him out after his return from a loan spell at Werder Bremen. Competition is fierce, places are few, and even proven forwards can find themselves edged aside.

For all these players, the story isn’t over. They turn now to domestic campaigns, form, fitness and, for some, rehabilitation. Come the new year, when registration windows reopen and squads are reshaped, the question will be simple: who has done enough to force their way back into Europe’s biggest nights?
