Erling Haaland Scores Again as Manchester City Dominates FC Porto

Erling Haaland does not wait. He arrives, he scores, he rewrites the record book.

On another Champions League night, in another European city, the Manchester City striker turned inevitability into routine again, striking twice in a 2-0 win at FC Porto to launch the holders’ league phase campaign with three points and a familiar sense of dominance.

He needed just two second-half touches of real consequence. One in the 47th minute. Another in the 91st. Two finishes, same outcome: game over.

Haaland chases down Aguero

The comparison with Aguero no longer feels premature; it feels inevitable. Aguero closed his City career on 260 goals in all competitions, a towering figure in the club’s modern history. Haaland, still only in the early chapters of his City story, already stands on 167 goals in 203 appearances. The gap is shrinking fast.

At this rate, it is a question of when, not if, he hunts down the Argentine.

No rest, no mercy

There was a genuine debate before kick-off about whether he would even start in Porto. Haaland came into the tie on the back of a draining stretch: seven goals in five matches for Norway at the World Cup and a relentless schedule for City.

Enzo Maresca had hinted that rotation might be coming.

“It’s not easy for Erling or for any of the players that play for club and international teams,” the City manager said before the match. “I think it is normal that you see these players start to be tired. So, it’s correct to give them some rest. It can be one game out or one week away.

“It depends on which moment we are in but the priority is to allow the players to be good and happy. When you see them tired the risk of injury increases, and we need players who are 100 percent.”

The logic was sound. The reality? Haaland started. Haaland scored. Twice.

The pressure Porto absorbed in the first half finally broke just after the restart, when the Norwegian found the space he needed and did what he always seems to do on these nights. By stoppage time, with Porto stretched and City in control, he added the second to seal the result and his own milestone.

Records falling, derbies looming

The goals in Portugal extended a streak that now feels like a weekly bulletin. Haaland had already hit a double the previous week. Over the weekend, he reached his 300th club goal, beating the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe to that landmark.

Porto simply became the latest stop on a tour of relentless scoring.

Three straight matches with a goal. Another Champions League brace. Another record matched. The pattern is clear, and so is the next target.

City’s attention now swings back to domestic matters and a derby that never needs extra hype. Manchester United await on Sunday, Sept. 13, with all the noise, tension and scrutiny that fixture guarantees.

Haaland will walk into it level with Aguero in Europe, chasing him down in the club’s all-time charts, and carrying the weight of expectation that he has created for himself.

Right now, for Manchester City and for anyone standing in their way, the question is not whether he will score.

It is who can possibly stop him.
