England Faces Late Squad Changes for Nations League Matches

England have been forced into a late reshuffle for their upcoming Nations League fixtures, with five players withdrawing and two new faces drafted in.

Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad, stripping the manager of significant quality across the pitch just days before the players are due to report.

Palmer’s absence will sting. Recalled after his controversial omission from England’s World Cup squad, the Chelsea forward had been expected to play a central role but has now withdrawn with what is described as a minor injury.

At Manchester United, the damage came in the same game. Mainoo and Rashford were both taken off late in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham and assessed by their club, with neither now available for international duty.

Rice’s withdrawal removes one of Tuchel’s key midfield pillars. The Arsenal midfielder completed 90 minutes in their 3-0 defeat by Brighton but will not join up with England. Livramento, restricted to just three substitute appearances for Newcastle this season, also drops out.

Tuchel has turned to youth and form to plug the gaps.

Everton’s James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White have been called up and will link up with the squad on Tuesday. Both arrive with something to prove and an opportunity that didn’t seem guaranteed a week ago.

Tuchel had already hinted that Gibbs-White was on the brink. Speaking on Friday, he revealed the 26-year-old, who has six caps, was close to making the original list. Now the Forest playmaker gets his chance.

Garner’s route back is just as striking. The midfielder won his first two senior England caps in March but, like Gibbs-White, missed out on selection for the 2026 World Cup. Now he returns at a time when the midfield picture is shifting again.

Five out, two in, and Nations League points on the line. Tuchel’s plans have been shaken. The question now is whether this patched-up squad can turn disruption into opportunity.
